Job Description:

This position involves providing cultural resources support for planning, engineering, and construction services to government, military, and commercial clients throughout the South and Southeastern United States, primarily in Louisiana. As an ELOS Archaeologist you will have the opportunity to work on projects that require compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Native American Graves Repatriation and Protection Act (NAGPRA), and state regulations. All work will be conducted under the guidance of senior cultural resources staff. The candidate will be responsible for working on all aspects of cultural resources projects, including but not limited to: proposals; background research; fieldwork (Phase I survey, Phase II testing, and Phase III mitigation); preparing CEQA, NEPA, and NHPA technical reports; coordinating consultation with State Historic Preservation Officers (SHPO), Tribal Historic Preservation Officers (THPO), Native American Tribes, Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), and multiple state, federal, and local agencies; evaluating properties for eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), preparing determinations of NRHP eligibility, and completing state survey forms. Job Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate compliance with NHPA, ARPA, NAGPRA, NEPA, state environmental regulations and other laws relating to cultural resources.
  • Conduct archival research and background records reviews.
  • Conduct all aspects of archaeological fieldwork (Phase I-III) and monitoring.
  • Conduct analyses and prepare and edit technical reports for cultural resources management projects.
  • Evaluate eligibility of resources for listing in the NRHP and state registers of historic properties.
  • Support clients during agency and tribal consultation.
  • Provide support and work with mid- and senior-level cultural resources staff.

Job Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Anthropology or Archaeology is preferred but a Bachelor’s degree with 4 years field experience can substitute.
  • Experience in both terrestrial and underwater archaeology preferred but not necessary
  • Meets Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology
  • Minimum of two to four years of professional archaeological field work experience
  • Knowledge of historic preservation laws and policies, including CEQA, NEPA, NHPA, ARPA, and NAGPRA.
  • Demonstrated experience in the archaeology of the southern and southeastern United States, particularly Louisiana.
  • Experience using GPS technology.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience recording archaeological sites on site forms required by various SHPOs and state agencies.
  • Must be capable of walking for long periods of time over unfamiliar terrain, excavating shovel tests and test units, screening soil, and carrying field equipment.
  • Must be willing and able to travel frequently and for long periods of time, as needed.
  • Must be motivated and able to work safely with minimum supervision.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:

  • Register of Professional Archaeologists-certified is preferred.
  • Familiarity and experience completing Louisiana forms and following 2018 guidelines.
  • Excellent Editing and English grammar editing.
  • Experience working in the consulting environment and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and be responsive to both internal and external clients.

The current term runs from 1 January 2019 through 31 December 2020. The Graduate Student Associate appointment is open to any currently enrolled graduate student studying underwater archaeology or a directly related field, and must remain a student throughout their tenure. The North American Society for Oceanic History is offering one dissertation fellowship in North American naval and maritime history for 2019. The fellowship is named in honor of NASOH past-president Dr. James C. Bradford, in recognition of his distinguished contributions to the field of American naval history.

Eligibility: Applicants must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. at the time of application and have an approved dissertation proposal on file at their degree-granting institution.

Topics in all periods of United States and North American naval and maritime history are eligible, including:
– Naval topics include strategy, tactics, and operations; institutional development and administration; biography, personnel, and social developments; exploration, science, and technology; and policy and diplomacy;

The editors of The Northern Mariner is actively seeking contributions for future issues of the journal.
The Northern Mariner / Le marin du nord, is a fully refereed journal devoted to all maritime, coastal and littoral aspects of the North Atlantic and North Pacific. It publishes essays, notes and documents on a variety of naval and maritime history, including merchant shipping, maritime labour, naval history, shipbuilding, fishing, environmental history, ports, trade, nautical archaeology and maritime societies. TNM/LMN is published quarterly by The Canadian Nautical Research Society in association with the North American Society for Oceanic History (NASOH). The four issues of TNM/LMN published annually total about 500 pages. Each issue contains feature articles (often illustrated) that run the gamut of maritime subjects. There are also frequent research notes, memoirs, documents, and review essays.
Beginning with our 2019 volume, The Northern Mariner/ Le marin du nord will be available online without embargo. We can make your articles and research available to audiences more quickly than other journals. Further, starting in 2019 The Northern Mariner/ Le marin du nord will be open access, and so will satisfy an increasingly important requirement for funding organizations.

Research Grants are given to qualified individuals or teams who are members of the NSS by the time the proposal is submitted for research-support in cave-related branches of study. This includes, but is not limited to, natural sciences (e.g., cave biology, geology, paleontology, and hydrology), social sciences (e.g., archaeology), and the humanities (e.g., speleological history). We also welcome interdisciplinary proposals. Grants applications will be evaluated for their potential to generate new information and insights that are suitable for submission to peer-reviewed publications. In this position you will serve as an Archeologist with the Submerged Resources Center (SRC) with duties consisting primarily of underwater archeological documentation and analysis and marine remote sensing survey and documentation of submerged cultural resources throughout the National Park System and with partner agencies on a state, national and international level. Because of equipment intensive field operations are done under the water, incumbent will be around water bodies involved in diving and boating activities. Because almost all field operations involve work in parks, you will be expected to travel extensively (e.g. up to seven months per years) and sometimes for long durations (e.g. 90 days or more). You will be expected to engage in diving operations, classified by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) as hazardous duty.

MSDS Marine are pleased to announce two new annual grant awards for maritime archaeology in the UK that will be awarded at the NAS conference in 2018.

2018 is the 45th anniversary of the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973. This represents over 45 years of Licensees and their teams volunteering their time and enthusiasm to help ensure the wreck sites are enjoyed, researched and protected. Licensees and their teams have played a huge role in the careers of all MSDS Marine staff. They have inspired us, taught us and helped us develop our skills and to recognise this we would like to give something back. The first award will be to help support Licensees and their teams.

The second award will help support maritime archaeology students in the UK. The growing MSDS Marine team includes a number of early years’ professionals who have all recently completed university courses. Their recent experience highlights the significant costs faced by students to complete their education. We strongly believe fieldwork and other training experiences help create professionals with a more rounded skill set and are keen to help allow students to maximise the experiences that they get. To this end we offer many volunteer opportunities for students but we are now also keen to help support them financially to gain experiences which might otherwise be unaffordable.
