MSDS Marine Grant Awards

https://msdsmarine.com/2019-msds-marine-grant-awards-apply-now/

We are delighted to be able to launch the 2019 MSDS Marine Grant Awards designed to help support maritime archaeology students and volunteers, particularly the teams working on the Protected Wreck Sites.

The growing MSDS Marine team includes a number of early years’ professionals who have all recently completed university courses. Their recent experience highlights the significant costs faced by students to complete their education. We strongly believe fieldwork and other training experiences help create professionals with a more rounded skill set and are keen to help allow students to maximise the experiences that they get. To this end we offer many volunteer opportunities for students but we are now also keen to help support them financially to gain experiences which might otherwise be unaffordable. In 2018 we supported University of Southampton maritime archaeology student Rebecca Fereirra to buy diving equipment to enable her to participate in fieldwork to develop her skills. Find out more about how the award helped her in this blog.

Licensees and their teams volunteer their time and enthusiasm to help ensure the wreck sites are enjoyed, researched and protected. Licensees and their teams have played a huge role in the careers of all MSDS Marine staff. They have inspired us, taught us and helped us develop our skills and to recognise this we would like to give something back. In 2018 we supported Mark Pearce and the Coronation Wreck Project in their work on the Coronation protected wreck site with the purchase of equipment to help them continue their survey work. Find out how this has helped them here in this blog.

In 2019 the closing date for applications is Friday 1st November 2019. Find out more about how to apply online here:

New grant to the University of Southampton (Centre for Maritime Archaeology)

Our new five-year grant of £2 million to the University of Southampton’s Centre for Maritime Archaeology will support a partnership with Ulster University and the University of Oxford to document endangered maritime archaeology in the Middle East and North Africa.

There is an urgent need to document endangered cultural heritage in the Middle East and North Africa. The region’s coastal and underwater sites face many threats: conflict, rising sea-levels, and urban and industrial development. Protecting and preserving these sites is vital to our understanding of maritime cultural heritage and its potential benefits to economic prosperity in the region. In many cases, existing research is fragmented and lacks information on sites’ locations, conditions and threats.

The new programme, MarEA, builds on the success of our first archaeology documentation programme – the Endangered Archaeology in the Middle East and North Africa (EAMENA) programme at the University of Oxford. The team will use satellite imagery, published data, archival information and local surveys to comprehensively record and assess threats to maritime and coastal sites in 16 countries in the region. All data will be made freely available on the EAMENA database.

To learn more about the programme, visit the MarEA website.
