Our new five-year grant of £2 million to the University of Southampton’s Centre for Maritime Archaeology will support a partnership with Ulster University and the University of Oxford to document endangered maritime archaeology in the Middle East and North Africa.
There is an urgent need to document endangered cultural heritage in the Middle East and North Africa. The region’s coastal and underwater sites face many threats: conflict, rising sea-levels, and urban and industrial development. Protecting and preserving these sites is vital to our understanding of maritime cultural heritage and its potential benefits to economic prosperity in the region. In many cases, existing research is fragmented and lacks information on sites’ locations, conditions and threats.
The new programme, MarEA, builds on the success of our first archaeology documentation programme – the Endangered Archaeology in the Middle East and North Africa (EAMENA) programme at the University of Oxford. The team will use satellite imagery, published data, archival information and local surveys to comprehensively record and assess threats to maritime and coastal sites in 16 countries in the region. All data will be made freely available on the EAMENA database.
