This Lake Phelps Canoes (LPC) Conservator position, based at the Queen Anne’s Revenge (QAR) Lab within the Office of State Archaeology (OSA) in DNCR’s Historic Resources Division, is critical to meet the goals of DNCR’s Collections Conservation, Diversity and Access mission; through conservation, documentation, analysis, associated research, and preparation for the eventual return of two Lake Phelps Canoes to exhibit at Pettigrew State Park, Visitor Center. This is a DNCR collaborative project between Pettigrew State Park, and OSA within DNCR’s Historic Resources Division. OSA bears primary responsibilities for protection and interpretation of thousands of underwater archaeological sites in North Carolina, including the Queen Anne’s Revenge/LaConcorde shipwreck. Pettigrew State Park preserves the natural environment around Lake Phelps and interprets the American Indian experience in the area, most notably concerning the construction and use of dugout canoes. This position is critical for completing the active re-treatment of historically significant Native American canoes recovered from Lake Phelps by ECU and OSA in the mid 1980’s. The LPC Conservator, will be an archaeological conservation professional and will have training and experience in the conservation of archaeological artifacts made of wood from recovery to conservation to exhibit.  The employee will work cooperatively with the OSA QAR Lab team and with Pettigrew State Park staff, and other DNCR staff, partners, and volunteers. The LPC Conservator will undertake all aspects of documentation (including photography and illustration), examination, conservation, analysis, and study, and preparation of the Lake Phelps canoes for exhibit at Pettigrew State Park.  Duties will include but not be limited to: documentation of wood canoes; examination and condition assessment of canoes including visual examination, microscopy, SEM analyses (as available at ECU), treatment of artifacts using or adapting proposed established and approved methodologies; maintenance and operation of conservation lab facilities and equipment; compliance with DNCR and ECU environmental health and safety requirements; maintaining written, computer and photographic documentation of artifacts and their treatments; reports on work undertaken of artifacts; preparation of  archive (artifacts and records for transfer to museum); supervision and training of student interns and volunteers; participation in public education and outreach activities, such as lab tours, presentations, seminars, and web site. The LPC Conservator will be a member of the DNCR QAR Lab team in Greenville, NC, located at East Carolina University’s West Research Campus. The LPC Conservator will report to the QAR Lab Senior Conservator.

The North Carolina Office of State Archaeology is currently advertising for an IMLS grant-funded conservator to assess and re-conserve dugout canoes excavated from Lake Phelps in NC. This position is a time-limited full time position with the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources and will be stationed at the QAR Conservation Lab in Greenville, NC.
