Alpine is currently searching for a number of applicants to fill roles as Geophysicists, Hydrographers, Geologists, and Marine Scientists. These positions will involve being part of both field data acquisition and in office data reduction and report teams.
Responsibilities/Qualifications:
Candidates should have an applicable Bachelors or Masters Degree in a Marine Science related discipline. Specific course work in marine geology, coastal geology, geophysics, sedimentology, hydrography, oceanography and GIS/CAD a major plus. Recent graduates are welcome to apply.
Work or internship experience related to Alpine’s core business will be viewed favorably. Experience can include working on projects related to marine construction, pipeline/cable route design, civil engineering (ports, harbors, bridges etc.) or coastal protection/renourishment. Candidate should also highlight any experience they may have working with the following equipment: analogue and digital seismic systems (subbottom profilers, multi-channel etc.), side scan sonars, magnetometers, swath bathymetry systems, navigation packages (software and GPS), tide gauges, wave gauges, current meters, sediment sampling tools etc.

The successful candidate will possess the skills, abilities, education, and experience to lead the Maritime Services practice group, foster innovation in marine projects, lead and mentor members of the practice group, and provide quality control in all Maritime projects and proposals. Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a minimum of M.A./M.S. in Anthropology, or related field, with an emphasis in underwater archaeology, plus 8 years supervisory and project management experience in maritime archaeology; experience as a professional marine archaeologist in the Northeast and Middle Atlantic US is preferred. The successful candidate must be able to function as a Qualified Marine Archaeologist (QMA) to Bureau of Ocean Energy Management standards regarding identification and treatment of historic properties in federal waters. Ability to work from our Providence, RI, office is preferred.
The Maritime Practice Leader must have proven ability and experience with collecting and interpreting data from geophysical surveys using remote-sensing technologies, including side-scan sonar, magnetometer, gradiometer, sub-bottom profiler systems, and multibeam to identify potential cultural resources (historical and pre-contact). The candidate should also be a certified diver and have experience utilizing Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) to assess targets of interest. Experience overseeing dive-related cultural resources projects and submerged paleo-landscapes is strongly preferred. Other applicable skills and experience include: demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to complete projects on time and on budget. The successful candidate must possess a thorough understanding of the legal frameworks of the position and industry. A driver’s license is required.

Artifact Conservation Intern
Summer 2020 Conservation Internship,The Mariners’ Museum and Park, Newport News, Virginia
This internship will provide practical experience in conservation, building on and strengthening the intern’s analytical, condition assessment, treatment research, and proposal writing skills acquired during their first/second year of graduate school.
1. The intern will conduct an in-depth analysis, write a condition report, and draft a preliminary treatment proposal for the Isabel, an early 20th century carvel planked Spanish fishing boat. The intern will work under the direct supervision of Chief Conservator William Hoffman, and will be assisted by Associate Research Scientist Dr. Molly McGath, Assistant Objects Conservator Paige Schmidt, and Material Culture Specialist Hannah Fleming. Over the course of 10 weeks, the intern will:
● Learn about maritime conservation and conservation of composite objects.
● Characterize paint, fibers, wood and other materials by taking samples or cross-sections and analyze these with light microscopy and other analytical techniques as necessary.
● Complete a comprehensive condition report.
● Conduct research on potential treatment options and formulate a preliminary treatment proposal. Emphasis will be on allowing the intern time to research treatment options
and to perform hands-on treatment testing.
● Assist with other treatments of collection objects.
Maritime Archaeology Field School
2020 Flinders University Maritime Archaeology Field School
Rye, Victoria 2-15 February 2020
The 2020 Maritime Archaeology Field School will be based in Rye, Victoria, and will run in cooperation with Heritage Victoria and the Maritime Archaeology Association of Victoria. We will be participating in an exciting project focusing on the survey and excavation of Australian-built shipwrecks off the Rye Jetty.
The field school provides students with an introduction to the techniques of underwater survey, position fixing, mapping, photography, recording, excavation, photogrammetry and conservation. Some lectures and videos will be provided on the various research methods and techniques used by maritime archaeologists. It includes practical exercises, field work and associated lecture/seminars.
Students may investigate a number of maritime sites on land and underwater including:
• Archaeological survey and excavation of three early historic shipwrecks off Rye Jetty;
• Geophysical surveys of waters around the Rye and Flinders Jetties;
• Maritime cultural landscape surveys of the area; or
• Archaeological survey of maritime infrastructure at Rye and Flinders

Who should attend?
There are no prerequisites for these short courses other than being over the age of 18 years. Moderate levels of fitness will be necessary for some components of the short courses. Note: SCUBA diving qualifications are preferred but NOT necessary for participation.
These courses will be of particular interest to students of archaeology, anthropology, history, geography, conservation, environmental management, and heritage, as well as vocational archaeologists and archaeology professionals.
Credit
Participants who complete the assessments are supplied with a Certificate of Achievement which states that the short course is equivalent to a 4.5 unit topic. Participants should be able to use this to negotiate credit with their home institution which we recommend they do prior to making arrangements to attend this field school.

Underwater Archaeology Fieldwork Report Awards
The AIA is pleased to announce a new award, to be presented each year at the Annual Meeting of the Institute, which will recognize a report on fieldwork (e.g. excavation and/or survey) deemed most worthy of recognition by the award committee. The award is in keeping with the Code of Ethics of the AIA, which emphasizes the need for archaeologists to publish the results of their field research.
This new award is named for the late Dr. Anna Marguerite McCann, an internationally renowned scholar and author in the fields of ancient Greek and Roman sculpture. The first female American underwater archaeologist, Dr. McCann was a pioneer in underwater archaeology, specializing in the use of robotic technology to study ancient Roman harbors. Her many accomplishments in the field have previously been recognized by the AIA, most notably when she was awarded the James R. Wiseman Book Award in 1989 and later when she was presented with the AIA’s highest honor, the Gold Medal Award for Archaeological Achievement in 1998.

We have an opportunity for a Heritage Consultant to join our expanding UK Environmental team. This position could be considered on a part time basis, minimum of 22.5 hours per week.
You will be an enthusiastic, optimistic, conscientious with excellent communication skills and a minimum of 2 years experience specifically in work place heritage and archaeological practice or consultancy. Direct experience of marine and coastal heritage consultancy is preferable, although individuals with experience of working as a marine archaeologist with an interest in pursuing a career in consultancy will also be considered.
You will need to efficient and enjoy the challenge of a growth-orientated environment. Able to work in a team and, at times, independently. The role will require close working with members of the heritage team, various environmental teams across the UK and in Europe, as well as with staff across other Business Lines. Additionally, the role will support promoting the heritage service offering, as and when required, via assistance with marketing materials and presentations to help ensure and maintain a continual turnover of heritage related work.
Project involvement typically includes offshore renewables, coastal defence and flood alleviation schemes, port and harbour developments (including capital dredging) and other industrial developments.
KUDAR-ANAMED Joint Fellowship in Maritime Archaeology

The Koç University Mustafa V. Koç Maritime Archeology Research Center (KUDAR) and Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) joint fellowship will support a post-doctoral or senior scholar specializing in Maritime Archeology or a closely-related topic for the 2020–2021 nine-month academic year (September 21st to June 15th). The successful applicant is required to reside in Istanbul during the fellowship period, to devote her/his time to a proposed research project, and to deliver three lectures on their original research. The fellowship provides one round-trip ticket to Istanbul, accommodation at ANAMED in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu neighborhood, five meals a week, and a monthly stipend. While in residence, the successful applicant will be able to take advantage of a limited research budget, the ANAMED seminar and study rooms, library resources within the Koç University system, and access to nearby research centers such as the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, the Institut Français d’Études Anatoliennes, and the Instituto Italiano di Cultura. Applications from scholars of all nationalities are encouraged, but fellows must be proficient in English, the language of instruction at Koç University.
Established in honor of Mustafa V. Koç, the Koç University Maritime Archeology Research Center (KUDAR) supports and promotes Turkish and international scholars conducting high-impact research on maritime archeology, history, ethnography, heritage management, artifact conservation, and other practices concerned with the relationship between society and the sea. The center prioritizes research in the Social Sciences, primarily Archeology, but also Anthropology, Human Geography, and similar disciplines. The SS United States Conservancy, a national nonprofit organization founded in 2004, is dedicated to protecting, revitalizing, and promoting the historic ocean liner SS United States, the largest passenger ship ever built in America and current holder of the transatlantic speed record. “America’s Flagship” transported four U.S. presidents, business moguls, movie stars, tourists, artists and authors, and immigrants, and the vessel is one of the sole surviving iconic ocean liners from the golden age of trans-Atlantic travel. The SS United States Conservancy purchased the SS United States in February of 2011 and is currently working to secure her future as a mixed-use, stationary development which will include a SS United States museum.
The Conservancy is moving full speed ahead on its goals of building its permanent collection of archives, art, and artifacts from the SS United States.
