2026 Coastal Warfare: Protecting the Coast with Fortifications and Fleets

The Estonian Maritime Museum has been organising international conferences dedicated to naval history since 2022.

The next conference, titled ‘Coastal Warfare: Protecting the Coast with Fortifications and Fleets’, will be held in Tallinn on 27 February 2026. As the title suggests, coastal warfare in conjunction with coastal protection will be under close examination. Although fleet-on-fleet engagements have aroused more interest among historians, the coastal domain also involves a number of interesting aspects. The concepts of coastal sea and coastal protection vary between countries and heavily depend on geographical characteristics. Therefore, this theatre of warfare may include sea fortifications, various coastal facilities, warships designated for coastal operations, and combined operations for both offensive and defensive purposes.

The presenters are also asked to write academic research papers on the basis of their presentations, which will later be published in the peer-reviewed Proceedings of the Estonian Maritime Museum.

Working language of the conference is English.

For additional information please contact researcher (naval warfare) Arto Oll: arto@meremuuseum.ee

Remit: This funding is intended to support costs associated with one-off, short-term training of individuals to fulfil regional strategic/capacity needs (e.g. conservation, geomorphology) or grants to individuals/institutions to provide capacity building training to others in the region following the identified regional capacity needs. This could include individuals who are enrolled in postgraduate degrees and who seek funding towards developing skills and experience relevant to their research (e.g. specialist training courses, placements) and/or career development in maritime archaeology.

Please note this award does not cover general studentship costs like fees or allowances.

Deadlines: Applications for this award will be considered monthly, on the 10th. You will be notified of the outcome within two months. If your application is time sensitive, please contact us to discuss options.

The Menorca Shipwreck Project (MSP) is a multi-year underwater archaeology initiative based in Cala en Busquets, a well-preserved ancient harbor in Ciutadella, Menorca. Launched in 2023, it brings together Explorers Club members, local archaeologists, and heritage professionals to explore centuries of maritime history.

A key feature is the MSP Field School, offering annual hands-on training in underwater excavation, artifact handling, photogrammetry, and Mediterranean maritime history. Open to students, early-career professionals, and prospective Explorers Club members, participants also complete scuba certification.
In 2024, the team began excavating three shipwrecks, with early findings pointing to at least one wreck dating to the early 13th-century Islamic period, potentially the first of its kind scientifically excavated in the Western Mediterranean.

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has launched a photography competition to raise public awareness of Egypt’s rich underwater cultural heritage.

The competition, which begins Friday, 1 August, invites participants to capture artistic images of artefacts that emerged from the Mediterranean Sea and are currently on display at the Graeco-Roman Museum and the Alexandria National Museum in Alexandria.

It comes in light of Egypt’s efforts to highlight its submerged archaeological treasures aligning with its commitment to the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage.

“The competition is part of broader efforts to engage the public with Egypt’s diverse heritage and to promote appreciation for historical finds recovered from beneath the Mediterranean,” said Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy.

He added that this initiative reflects the ministry’s ongoing dedication to enhancing awareness and appreciation of underwater cultural heritage and to showcasing Egypt’s unique archaeological assets to the world.

According to Mohamed Ismail Khaled, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), the competition is one of several cultural events planned by the ministry to shed light on submerged heritage sites and artefacts.

Full competition details and updates will be published on the ministry’s official social media platforms.

He continued that the photographers in Egypt and abroad are eligible to participate, with a photography window open from August 1 to 10 August, during the official operating hours of both museums in Alexandria. Submissions must be sent to training@mota.gov.eg by Thursday, 14 August, and must include the photograph along with a short biography of the participant.

Photos will be evaluated by a specialized jury comprising university professors and experts in photography and archaeology. The panel will operate under the supervision of the competition’s technical secretariat.

Ahmed Rahima, Assistant Minister for Human Resources Development and Head of the Central Training Unit, explained that evaluation criteria will focus on technical quality, creativity, and the ability to highlight the aesthetic and historical value of the featured artefacts. The names of the winners will be announced on 18 August, with an official award ceremony scheduled for 21 August.

The ministry has extended an open invitation to both Egyptian and international photography enthusiasts to take part in this unique cultural initiative, which blends art, history, and heritage preservation.
