Professor in Preservation of Underwater Cultural Heritage The use of natural sciences to study and enable the preservation of archaeological materials deposited underwater has a long tradition in Denmark. The National Museum of Denmark has been a pioneering institution since the 1960s in both the development of underwater archaeological techniques and conservation of underwater finds. Through research into archaeological materials deposited underwater, it has been possible to identify the various cultural and natural (physical, chemical and biological) threats to this heritage in order to document their effects and where possible develop sustainable strategies to preserve these sites. Furthermore, in a rapidly changing ocean environment and increasing human exploitation of the marine environment, it is necessary to develop new concepts for assessing and preserving this resource. It is with this background that the National Museum wishes to create a permanent professorship in the preservation of underwater cultural heritage, in order to strengthen and further develop research in this area and to highlight and preserve Denmark´s rich underwater cultural heritage.

Job description

M23AS00328 GM-22-05: Reevaluating BOEM’s Guidelines for Identifying Submerged Pre-Contact Archaeological Sites in the Gulf of Mexico. Department of the Interior. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management

https://www.grants.gov/web/grants/view-opportunity.html?oppId=348481

Submerged pre-contact sites on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) are difficult to identify and confirm using traditional mapping technologies and BOEM’s current survey guidelines.  BOEM errs on the side of caution by assigning avoidance mitigations to potential, but unconfirmed, paleolandscapes that may or may not contain preserved archaeological features.  This results in avoidance of areas that may not warrant exclusion from OCS activities across BOEM’s three program areas.  Additionally, the identification and preservation of submerged pre-contact cultural resources are frequently cited as priorities by Native American Tribes in BOEM’s government-to-government consultations.

The objectives of this study are to: Develop updated and refined regional paleolandscape reconstructions to identify areas with a higher preservation potential for submerged pre-contact archaeological remains. Design, test the efficacy of, and compare results from revised survey methodologies conducted in geologically distinct areas of the GOM to recommend best practices to better detect and delineate preserved paleolandforms and assess their likelihood of containing archaeological materials. Recommend more effective methodologies and revisions to BOEM’s current survey guidelines for submerged paleolandscapes in the GOM Region. This study will assess the currently available data and known or potential locations for submerged pre-contact sites in the GOM and will compile a geospatial database including preservation potential (and lack of potential), estimated age of landforms, depth of burial, and other pertinent information.  This study will also conduct geophysical surveys and investigations of potential submerged archaeological features in geologically and environmentally distinct areas in the northern GOM for a comparative analysis of methodologies (at a minimum, areas in the eastern GOM and western GOM).

PHD M/W CONTEPAV Environmental impact of shipwrecks in the English Channel: characterization of contaminant releases and their spatio-temporal variations

https://emploi.cnrs.fr/Offres/Doctorant/UMR6566-GAEDIE-001/Default.aspx?lang=EN

Title : Environmental impact of shipwrecks in the English Channel: characterization of contaminant releases and their spatio-temporal variations
Key words : maritime heritage, shipwrecks, contaminants, PAHs, pollution.
This research aims to assess the environmental impact of a series of wrecks from the Second World War located in the Bay of Seine and off Dieppe. This is a new study in France, which has one of the largest concentrations of wrecks from major conflicts in the world. It will combine an approach that meets the expectations of the assessment of Descriptor 8 “Contaminants in the environment” of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive 2008/56/EC (MSFD), with innovative research to analyze the spatio-temporal effects of shipwrecks on the chemical and biological components of marine ecosystems. The study area will be the Channel-North Sea sub-region (SRM MMN), which appears to be the most contaminated of the 4 maritime sub-regions. In the sediments of the coastal water body, metals are the most problematic contaminants, mainly nickel, lead, zinc, chromium and mercury. Contamination with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is mostly localized between Dieppe and the eastern part of the Seine Bay. In bivalves, no exceedance of the health threshold was observed for metals. Exceedances of PAHs, fluoranthene and benzo(a)pyrene, were found in the Seine Bay. This project, which brings together environmental sciences and humanities, will find its place in Axis 2 of the GdR OMER, Characterization and diagnosis of marine systems. It should provide new knowledge on additional anthropic pressures on ecosystems, and will also lead to further reflection on the management of this heritage. If until now the dialogue on the protection and enhancement of historic wrecks has focused on cultural and heritage enhancement (UNESCO Convention, 2001), it will be addressed from an ecological and environmental perspective. The data obtained will lead to a new dialogue between the public authorities and the actors of the maritime world on the management and protection of this heritage; a dialogue that will feed the working group of the GdR OMER “Oceans & heritage processes”. To meet the challenge of this project, it will characterize the release of contaminants and their spatio-temporal variations using a combination of different monitoring methods (direct analysis by sampling, passive sensors) and matrices (sediment, water, biota). The objectives are: 1) To highlight the diffusion of contaminants by sampling at different distances from the wreck; 2) To determine the historical pollution related to wrecks by sampling sediments at depth; 3) To measure the short-term release of contaminants by sampling biota and installing passive samplers; 4) To identify wrecks as a source of historical, diffuse, or point source pollution; 5) To compare the measured values with the measurements of the ROCCH stations in order to correlate the observed threshold exceedances and the problematic substances. The results will also be compared with the OSPAR guidelines to determine the good ecological status of nearby ecosystems; 6) Relate the historical data of the wrecks, in relation to the shipwreck and post-sinking events (scraping, counter-mining) and the levels of contaminants measured, and demonstrate the influence of the state of conservation of the ship on the pollution levels.

The PhD will take place within the UMR 6566 CReAAH-LARA which is a highly multidisciplinary laboratory (archaeology, archaeosciences, history) and the Institut des Substances et Organismes de la Mer (ISOMER) which analyzes the diversity, the functioning and the disturbances of marine ecosystems, both hosted by Nantes University. The processing and analysis of the samples will be done mainly at ISOMER, but also in partnership with IFREMER and the ECOCHEM-ODNature laboratory of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences.

This project requires a good physical condition and an ability to scuba dive. The realization and the manipulation of the samples will be carried out in accordance with the protocols of ISOMER and the partner structures (IFREMER, ACOCHEM-ODNature, DRASSM). The candidate will have to carry out field missions requiring travel between the host laboratory (in Nantes, Science et Tertre campus) and the research field in the Normandy region.

The project is at the interface of archaeology and chemistry of marine ecosystems, so the candidate must have a certain competence in one of these two disciplines. Finally, the candidate will have to participate in publications, scientific events and take part in the activities of the GDR Océan et Mer and in one of the developed axes. Application procedure: to apply, please send a letter of motivation accompanied by a Curriculum Vitae.
