The Anchor Watch program provides an exciting overnight experience for youth groups aboard the full-rigged ship the JOSEPH CONRAD. Programs are held on Friday and Saturday evenings in the fall and spring.

Responsibilities:

Lead tours, outdoor and indoor games and activities, scout activities and workshops

Assist in rigging climbing

Underwater Archeologist (Archaeologist II) Position

The Maritime Research Division of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina, Columbia is seeking an Underwater Archaeologist (Archaeologist II).  The position is full-time with benefits and will work out of our field office in Charleston, South Carolina.  The position is open until 31 January 2015.  We hope to offer the position by the end of February with a start date by April or May 2015.  The successful candidate will complete a team of four members and complement our efforts to study and preserve the maritime archaeological legacy in the rivers and coastal waters of South Carolina.

Underwater Archaeologist (Archaeologist II):

The employee will direct and coordinate public outreach and educational offerings by the MRD.  The position also supervises the Hobby Diver License program through oversight of license and report processing, site and collection assessments, and other aspects of the program.  In addition to these primary duties, the underwater archaeologist participates in research projects and will act in the capacity of principal/co-principal investigator as appropriate and present findings through various professional and public avenues.  The employee will seek funding and grant opportunities to support MRD activities and objectives.  The employee will oversee all components of the Charleston field office including oversight of finances, office and field equipment, two boats, and one vehicle.  The position is supervisory—managing one employee.  This position requires periodic travel for fieldwork, presentations, and meetings, including working on weekends as needed.  The incumbent reports directly to the state underwater archaeologist.  The successful candidate will also meet SCIAA’s Dive Safety & Control Board scientific diving requirements.

NCMM Boat Builder

NORTH CAROLINA MARITIME MUSEUM HIRING BOAT BUILDER

The North Carolina Maritime Museum in the Department of Cultural Resources seeks a Museum Specialist – Boatbuilder for its Watercraft Center in Beaufort, NC. This is a full-time permanent State Government position. The hiring salary range is $34,190 – $42,000, and the successful candidate will start working early in the New Year.

Candidates must be knowledgeable in vernacular and “classic” watercraft history and construction techniques, skilled in traditional boat building techniques and in teaching them to the public and able to train and supervise a largely volunteer work force. Prefer graduation from a four year college/university , some supervisory and managerial experience or three years of related work experience with demonstrated knowledge of boat building. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience are strongly urged to apply.

Expert Review needed, Intl. Center for Underwater Archaeology

Call for Applications: Expert Review of the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology (ICUA)

UNESCO is welcoming applications from independent expert reviewers to assess the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology (ICUA), based in Zadar, Croatia. The successful applicant will conduct a review of the ICUA Centre, including a desk-based assessment, a visit to the Centre and interviews with relevant stakeholders, in particular in the region and in UNESCO Headquarters (Paris) and the UNESCO Venice Office. The review process should result in a comprehensive and useful review report.

Applicants are required to have the following qualifications:

  • At least 7 years of professional experience in research and/or capacity-building in the field of cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue, cultural heritage, cultural policy or culture and development;
  • At least 7 years of professional experience in policy and programme evaluation in the context of international development;
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken), other languages, in particular Croatian, of advantage;
  • Knowledge of the role and mandate of UNESCO and its programmes.

Maritime Archaeology Field School

Maritime Archaeology Field School – Phillip Island – Victoria, 1 – 15 February 2015
This Maritime Archaeology Field School provides students with an introduction to the techniques of underwater survey, position fixing, mapping, photography, recording and excavation.  Some lectures and videos will be provided on the various research methods and techniques used by maritime archaeologists. The Field School will include practical exercises, field work and associated lecture/seminars.

This topic aims to:
– develop the field skills associated with the practice of underwater archaeology;
– improve understanding of the methodological approaches to archaeology under
water;
– increase knowledge and understanding of the history and practice of maritime archaeology;
– appreciate the place and role of maritime archaeology in the interpretation of maritime subcultures and culture in the wider context.

Students interested in participating in the diving activity offered as a part of this field school are advised to review our website for all requirements, with particular attention drawn to diving qualification and dive medical requirements.

The project Material Experts (ME) will use either education, personal experience, or some combination of the two to assist their team with the identification and documentation of thousands of naval artifacts ranging from 60,000lbs anchors to small archaeological artifacts. It is vital that the ME know the material culture of the US Navy and understands how to conduct research on these items in order to accurately identify and date items.
