Type of Employment: Full-time (40 hours per week), for a length of 14 weeks. Work hours are flexible between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; evening and weekend work required.

The Wisconsin Historical Society Maritime Preservation and Archaeology Program and the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute are seeking a graduate-level Maritime Archaeologist to fill a fellowship position. This position works under staff maritime archaeologists and State Archaeologist in the State Historic Preservation Office to preserve the maritime archaeological legacy of Wisconsin. This is a Limited Term Employee.

The archeologist will work on specific grant related projects, conducting research and analysis, as well as underwater archaeological fieldwork. The fellowship is part of a two-year grant funded by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute to research and complete a Regional Context on scow schooners in the Great Lakes, providing a comparative analysis of their construction, use, and ties to Wisconsin’s broader maritime cultural past. They will be assigned tasks by the current archaeological staff and will carry them out with the assistance of volunteers or other archaeologists. The applicant must have knowledge and experience in conducting underwater archaeological diving operations and use of manual underwater mapping equipment. Knowledge of the operation of research vessels and project vehicles is not required but preferred. The applicant is responsible for daily completion of field tasks, project notes and maps, and for basic maintenance of project equipment.

The archaeologist will conduct historical research, write reports based upon archaeological and archival research, and complete other project-related tasks and other duties as assigned.

The archaeologist will also develop interpretive materials, prepare materials for the program’s websites, public programing, and historic shipwreck moorings.

This position requires extensive travel for fieldwork, presentations, and meetings. These activities usually include some weekend and evening hours. The position also requires the ability to conduct underwater archaeological surveys in cold water environments at depths ranging from 0 to 130 ft.

B6. Collect archaeological reports and maritime literature on scow-schooner wreck sites throughout the Great Lakes and analyze site notes, drawings, photographs, and historical information for additional interpretation

B7. Develop an addition to the Multiple Property Documentation Great Lakes Shipwrecks of Wisconsin for scow-schooners

B8. Write description of the design, development, and use of scow schooners throughout the Great Lakes region, and place them within a larger historical and cultural context

10% C. Public Outreach.

C1. Respond to written, electronic, and verbal requests for information about archaeological sites from professional, avocationalists, and other members of the public regarding the archaeology of Wisconsin.

C2. Provide lectures, presentations, and workshops on Wisconsin’s maritime archeology as requested.

10% D. Complete other tasks as assigned by the State Archaeologist and staff maritime archaeologists

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

The candidate must be a current graduate student and must also demonstrate experience in conducting historical research, report writing based upon the archaeological and archival research.

The applicant must have, at a minimum, a Nitrox Diver certification and a valid driver’s license. Preference will be given to applicants with a Drysuit Diver certification.

The position requires the ability to conduct underwater archaeological surveys in cold water environments at depths ranging from 0 to 130 ft.

Ability to work from our Providence, RI, office is preferred.

The Maritime Practice Leader must have proven ability and experience with collecting and interpreting data from geophysical surveys using remote-sensing technologies, including side-scan sonar, magnetometer, gradiometer, sub-bottom profiler systems, and multibeam to identify potential cultural resources (historical and pre-contact). The candidate should also be a certified diver and have experience utilizing Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) to assess targets of interest. Experience overseeing dive-related cultural resources projects and submerged paleo-landscapes is strongly preferred. Other applicable skills and experience include: demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to complete projects on time and on budget. The successful candidate must possess a thorough understanding of the legal frameworks of the position and industry. A driver’s license is required.

Valencia port authority has called a tender for the geotechnical and underwater archaeological survey campaign for the container dock project of the northern extension of the harbour, at an estimated value of €1.4 million euro ($1.6 million).

The port has launched the project to expand the port, which will include a future container terminal with a berth of about two km in length and a draft of 20 metres, an adjacent esplanade area of some 137 hectares, a maritime access canal, road and rail connection.

The duration of the contract is seven months and the deadline for receiving offers will expire on June 19.

2019 Field School in Maritime Archaeology

SEAMAHP in collaboration with Massachusetts BUAR will be running a hands-on archaeological dig into the past, as an accredited course through Salem State University (SSU). The course will cover methods and practice of archaeological research, survey and documentation of historic shipwreck(s) and maritime site(s) on the shores north of Boston. In addition to methodological training and academic lectures, participants will get valuable experience with all aspects of fieldwork in a dynamic environment on the seashore.

Last year we began investigating a steamship wreck on Little Misery Island near Salem. We’ll be delving into the site again this summer, ferrying out to the island each day the tide allows.

2019 Short Courses in Maritime Archaeology @ Flinders
1. CONSERVATION PRACTICUM

This course is an intensive introduction to materials science; deterioration processes in marine environments; pre-disturbance conservation surveys; in-situ conservation and stabilisation; recovery, initial storage, stabilisation and transportation of artefacts; and refers to storage and display of conserved artefacts. It is designed to provide participants with a general theoretical and practical background to archaeological conservation. It should also equip archaeologists with the appropriate conservation knowledge and skills necessary for the effective management of submerged cultural heritage. This topic will be taught in intensive mode during one week and will necessitate involvement and input from a range of maritime practitioners.  The body of the topic will comprise lectures, a practical exercise and a tutorial. It will be taught at Flinders University with the support of staff from the Department of Materials Conservation, Western Australian Museum.

2. ADVANCED PRACTICUM IN MARITIME ARCHAEOLOGY
Marine geophysics and remote sensing
This short course will introduce students to the basics of marine geophysics for archaeology and the theory behind remote sensing: sidescan, marine magnetometer, multi beam and sub bottom profiler. The practicum will include one field day on the water where students learn how to operate a sidescan sonar, collect data on a local shipwreck site using a sidescan sonar, and process the data. Students will work closely with our Industry partners. The field day will be devoted to data acquisition, shipwreck mapping, interpretation and reporting as would be expected in a professional environment. Students will also learn data processing using SonarWiz software in the Digital Archaeology Lab.

Who should attend?
There are no prerequisites for these short courses other than being over the age of 18 years. Moderate levels of fitness will be necessary for some components of the short courses. Note: SCUBA diving qualifications are NOT necessary for participation.
These courses will be of particular interest to students of archaeology, anthropology, history, geography, conservation, environmental management, and heritage, as well as avocational archaeologists and archaeology professionals.
Credit
Participants who complete the assessments are supplied with a Certificate of Achievement which states that the short course is equivalent to a 4.5 unit topic. Participants should be able to use this to negotiate credit with their home institution which we recommend they do prior to making arrangements to attend this field school.

The position will be within a small but growing historic environment (heritage) team, as part of the wider multi-disciplinary environment team.

As a marine heritage consultant you will be expected to undertake, archaeological desk-based assessments, conduct site visits and walkovers and monitor site works (coastal and intertidal), deliver tool box talks and presentations to on-site construction teams, prepare method statements and WSIs, and produce and compile marine historic environment (marine archaeology and cultural heritage) ES chapters associated with the coastal, intertidal and offshore elements of both large and small scale development planning projects.

Additionally, the role will support promoting the heritage service offering, as and when required, via assistance with marketing materials and presentations to help ensure and maintain a continual turnover of heritage related work.

Project involvement typically includes offshore renewables, coastal defence and flood alleviation schemes, port and harbour developments (including capital dredging) and other industrial developments.

Main work areas will be:-

  • Marine and coastal heritage and archaeological consultancy
  • Marine and coastal heritage and archaeological elements of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and environmental appraisal
  • Supporting the delivery of developments and projects within the UK Consent and Planning system
  • Supporting coastal and intertidal heritage and archaeological investigations, monitoring, data analysis and assessment
  • General support to the heritage lead, other heritage team members, the wider environment team and company as a whole

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelors and/or Masters degree in marine archaeology and/or marine archaeology combined with another related discipline
  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience in marine heritage consultancy or working as a marine/underwater archaeologist
  • Good understanding of heritage legislation, the EIA process, UK planning and consenting regimes and relevant government policy (and specifically of marine heritage legislation and the marine planning system)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, organisational, analytical and time management skills
  • Excellent computer and numeracy skills
  • Good understanding of the principles of robust project and task management (including financial), ensuring effective execution, where applicable under a Project Manager, in line with Project Management guidelines and Management System procedures
