The Coos Historical & Maritime Museum, on the beautiful southern Oregon coast, seeks an energetic and creative person for its innovative, rapidly expanding schools program. The position requires extensive contact and collaboration with active and retired educational professionals, local tribes, agencies, partner organizations, volunteers, community college students, and serves primarily grade-school students.
Primary Responsibilities:
– Ensure conceptual continuity between program content and classroom learning.
– Develop or revamp lesson plans, supporting materials and field trips as needed, utilizing museum and community resources.

10) Writer, The USS Constitution Museum is seeking volunteers or interns to craft biographies of Old Ironsides War of 1812 sailors. 11) Family Programming Intern, The USS Constitution Museum seeks an energetic and creative individual interested in developing interpretive programs for a family audience. The paid Family Programming Intern will create thematic programs and training material for staff and volunteers that combines research material with interpretive techniques, activities, and tips for engaging family audiences. English Heritage protects and provides advice on this country’s unique legacy of historic buildings, landscapes and archaeological sites. We also manage over 400 sites and welcome in excess of 11 million visitors to these each year.

Our Archaeological Conservation and Technology Team has a central role in providing a holistic approach to the study of artefacts and associated residues, from creation through use, modification, burial and recovery, to subsequent investigative analysis.

Your brief will be to handle the investigative conservation of materials from terrestrial and marine environments on the archaeological projects we support. In addition, you’ll guide, advise and train others in archaeological conservation, and carry out research.

The work will involve site visits, assessments, analysis and dissemination, and using equipment such as microscopy,
X-Radiography, XRF, XRD and FTIR. The variety continues, as you’ll be initiating and taking on research to maintain best practice, and making sure the results reach the relevant publications. Advice and professional training form another strand of the work, which will see you training regional curators, consultants and archaeologists.

Ideally an accredited Conservator in ICON or someone who’s working towards accredited status, you will certainly have a relevant degree or equivalent in Archaeological Conservation. Experience in investigative conservation and in conserving a wide range of archaeological materials will be essential, and you should be keen to deliver training.

Maritime Archaeology and History of Hawaii Annual Symposium, Call for Papers

This is a call for papers for the 22nd Annual Symposium on Maritime Archaeology and History of Hawai`i and the Pacific, February 18-21, 2011 in Hilo, on the Big island of Hawai`i. The theme for this year’s conference is “Reading Coastal Footprints: Ecology and Maritime Archaeology in the Pacific.” Paper topics are not limited to this theme but special consideration will be given to abstracts that incorporate this message.  Tentative session titles include:

 –  Historical and archaeological research on human influences on marine life

 –  Using ecological models in archaeology

 –  Recent maritime archaeology fieldwork

 –  General sessions on maritime archaeology and maritime history ABSTRACTS should be no more than 300 words and include a title, name(s) of presenters and affiliation. All presenters are expected to register for the conference. Information concerning registration will be sent to presenters upon acceptance of their abstracts. Heritage Awareness Diving Seminar May 18-19

The Spring 2010 Heritage Awareness Diving Seminar will focus on providing COURSE DIRECTORS,
INSTRUCTOR TRAINERS, and INSTRUCTORS with a greater knowledge of how to proactively protect
shipwrecks, artificial reefs, and other underwater cultural sites. Upon completion of the Seminar, you will be able to
teach the new Heritage Awareness Specialty Course (approved by NAUI, PADI, and SSI) and will know how to
promote sustainable underwater heritage tourism in your area.

The two-day seminar will include one day of classroom-based learning and one day of in-field training.

The goal of the Living History Players is to provide interpretive programming to youth and visitors, acting as educators to the general public about Canada’s military history, with focus in 2010 on Canada’s Navy and their 100th Centennial celebration. Living History Players (LHP) will have the opportunity to utilize their research, drama and education skills to develop, write and perform a play for the public and school-age children, in honour of the 100th Centennial of the Canadian Navy. Each student will undertake the task of developing a historically accurate 15-minute play focusing on the 100th Centennial celebration of the Canadian Navy. This will include applying educational and interpretive skills, writing and learning a script, costuming the characters and building props and/or backdrop for the play. Performances of the play will be part of the museums Youth Adventure Program, a day-long program of fun, adventure and learning for youth aged 6-12, offered throughout the summer months. It will be the responsibility of the Living History Players to introduce youth and visitors to the past and the present day artefacts of Canada’s Naval history through interpretive and educational programs such as gallery tours and the hands-on artefact handling program. Living History Players will act as ambassadors to the museum overall and assist in special events, facilitate the museums Birthday Party program and assist in the processing of educational and interpretive booking requests. Living History Players will gain valuable knowledge of our military history and experience in adapting this knowledge as educational interpreters within a museum environment. Living History Players will be working directly under the Education Department staff. Dates and duration of employment are subject to successful grant application.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Under the direct supervision of the Director of the Archeology Division, the State Marine Archeologist is responsible for the protection, preservation, and investigation of historic shipwrecks within all state-owned waters of Texas. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: review all proposed developments within state waters for possible impacts to archeological resources under the Antiquities Code of Texas and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act; conduct archeological research on submerged historic resources including remote-sensing surveys and diving investigations; produce professional reports on investigations conducted; maintain GIS-based inventory of historic shipwrecks within Texas; oversee maintenance of all equipment necessary for underwater archeology field investigations; make presentations to professional, avocational, and interested community groups regarding underwater archeology in Texas generally and on specific investigations; work closely with volunteers to conduct research projects; provide training to volunteers as necessary; may undertake laboratory conservation of archeological resources on a small scale. The State Marine Archeologist has no staff working directly under the position but occasionally draws staff from other programs within the agency to assist in field projects. Most of the field work is done using specially qualified volunteers. Travel is required. Complies with all agency policies and procedures.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate degree from an accredited college or university with a Masters Degree or higher in Anthropology (Archeology), History, or a closely related field. 5 years experience in underwater archeology including conduct and supervision of remote-sensing surveys and diving investigation of wrecks. A graduate degree specializing in nautical or marine archeology may be substituted for one year of experience. Must meet professional qualifications to hold an Antiquities Permit issued by the Texas Historical Commission.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Ability in all aspects of boat operations including towing and launching a 27 ft. boat

• Ability to operate Electronic survey equipment operations and interfacing, specifically side-scan sonar, marine magnetometer, fathometer, GPS, and navigation/data collection software

• Ability to collect survey data collection, data analysis, and archeological report preparation

• Familiarity with GIS software

• Ability and willingness to dive in black water conditions

• Skill in public speaking

• Knowledge of the Antiquities Code of Texas and supporting regulations

• Knowledge of the National Historic Preservation Act, the Abandoned Shipwreck Act, and other legislation providing for the protection of historic resources

• General knowledge of the maritime history of Texas

• Knowledge of and experience with laboratory conservation procedures for artifacts recovered from a marine environment is an advantage
