Hydrographer/Marine Technician to co-lead the day-to-day operations of nearshore shallow water surveys. The Center has a state-of-the-art interferometric sonar system which is currently being used on several projects.
Main responsibilities are the acquisition and processing of hydrographic data during day cruises based out of Provincetown, MA. Qualifications include:
• experience at sea and small boat operation skills
• familiarity with hydrographic data collection
• an understanding of the supporting equipment and electronics (or willingness to learn)
• knowledge of or aptitude for hydrographic data analysis and visualization through software packages such as ARCGIS, HYPACK, CARIS, and Fledermaus.
• Minimum of Master’s Degree in a relevant field
Scientists, hydrographers, technicians, and other specialists are encouraged to apply. Ample opportunities exist for program expansion, as well as integration with other PCCS programs, depending on candidate skills and interests.
5) Bicentennial Programs Coordinator
The USS Constitution Museum seeks an energetic and creative individual to develop interpretive programs for a primarily family audience. This full time, 40 hour/week position is expected to last one year. The five day work week includes one weekend day and the position includes a full benefits package. EOE. The Coordinator will create thematic programs and training material that combines research material with interpretive techniques and activities for engaging audiences. The bicentennial of the War of 1812 provides the opportunity for the Museum to revamp its programming options and the Coordinator will play an integral part in reshaping the Museum’s offerings. The timing of the position coincides with the launch of a new “Old Ironsides 1812 Discovery Center” exhibit designed to be a joint exhibition and programming space. The Coordinator will be engaged in a variety of duties that may include: evaluating source materials for appropriate thematic connections, researching family programming at other institutions, organizing program content, developing interpretive, hands-on, minds-on activities and prototyping and evaluating activities. The Coordinator will work under the Director of Collections and Learning and with the Museum Learning Managers. QUALIFICATIONS:-Experience working with a family audience -Excellent spoken and written communication skills -Evidence of creative program design -Degrees in museum studies, education, and history programs preferred. Lowell’s Boat Shop is a National Historic Landmark and working museum, dedicated to preserving and perpetuating the art and craft of wooden boat building. Established in 1793, Lowell’s Boat Shop is the oldest continuously operating wooden boat building shop in the United States and is cited as the birthplace of the legendary fishing dory.

This AHRC funded post is available from 1st January 2012 to 30th November 2012. You will take the day-to-day lead in the construction of the boat at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, in Falmouth.

The University of Oregon, Department of Anthropology announces a 1.0 FTE tenure-track position in archaeology at the Assistant or Associate Professor level beginning Fall Term, 2012. We seek an outstanding, broadly-trained coastal or island archaeologist whose work addresses environmental and cultural change that has relevance for problems facing society today. An archaeologist working on population migrations or continental or island colonizations would also supplement our regional expertise. We seek a colleague who will diversify us, complementing not duplicating the existing strengths in the department. Candidates should also have a strong record of publication and working collaboratively with local communities. We aim to hire an individual with interdisciplinary interests who will strengthen links among the subfields of anthropology in the department. The successful candidate is expected to conduct a rigorous, fieldwork and laboratory based, externally-funded research program as well as teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. A Ph.D. is required by October 15, 2011. Closes October 15.

The Underwater Archaeology Unit (UAU) of Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht (DAHG) is compiling an Inventory of all shipwrecks recorded in Irish Waters. The UAU currently has a wreck database containing approximately 10,000 wreck records which is held in an MS Access database. The format of this database has recently been redesigned and therefore a certain level of data formatting and standardisation is required in order to facilitate efficient use of the database. DAHG now invites tenders to carry out a block of work updating and editing the Shipwreck Inventory database. The successful tenderer will need to be in a position to begin work on this project from 19th September 2011 and it is envisaged that the contract shall be completed by 6 April 2012. A detailed specification in relation to the tender request is presented in the RFT document.
The Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project (RIMAP), a not-for-profit corporation based out of Newport, Rhode Island, USA, is offering two 1-day underwater archaeology-related workshops in October 2011:

1) Bournemouth University Project Development Officer, closes September 8
‘Bringing People to the Museum and the Museum underwater’. This is a three year project led by Bournemouth University in partnership with Poole Museum Service and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The project seeks to create access to a unique and important 17th century ship wrecked just outside of Poole Harbour. We seek a highly efficient and organised individual who is flexible and able to manage deadlines effectively. The post holder must have a sound understanding of maritime archaeology.
2) PhD studentship, Kingston University, closes 22 August
The School of Art & Design History, Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at Kingston University, and the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich are offering a funded, full-time PhD studentship, tenable for 3 years, commencing October 2011. The studentship is funded through the AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Awards Scheme. The project will be supervised by Professor Anne Massey, Kingston University, and John Graves, Curator of Ship History at the National Maritime Museum. This project supports the work of one doctoral student to investigate the archives of the shipping company, the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (renamed P&O in 1840), and its subsidiary companies, during the period of its operation.
