1) Historian, Naval History and Heritage Command, closes 7 April
This position is located at the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC), Washington Navy Yard. The mission of the Naval History and Heritage Command is to: collect, preserve, protect, and make available the artifacts, documents, and art that best embody our naval history and heritage for present and future generations through professional research, analysis, interpretation, products and services.
The NHHC provides historical information services, writes and publishes naval histories, operates the Navy Department Library, maintains archives for naval operational and other selected records, coordinates collection, preservation, distribution, and exhibition of art, historical artifacts, and photographs, and manages the Navy’s submerged cultural resources, including shipwrecks and sunken aircraft.

This position is located in the Histories Branch, a component of the Naval History and Heritage Command in Port Hueneme, CA. The mission of the Histories Branch is to research, preserve and disseminate the history of the Navy. The Histories Branch accomplishes this task by collecting, analyzing and preserving historical records and information and developing historical knowledge products which inform Navy leadership, sailors and the American public. Professional historical research and products are essential for the Histories Branch to accomplish their mission.
3) Doctoral Award, University of York, Hull Maritime Museum, closes 27 April
The Department of Art History at the University of York, in partnership with Hull Maritime Museum, invites applications for a fully-funded AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award studentship to commence in October 2015. The PhD supervisors are Prof. Jason Edwards (York) and Robin Diaper (Curator, Hull Maritime Museum). Focusing on Hull’s maritime activities from the late 18th century, the museum’s collections contain numerous pieces of scrimshaw, more than 300 canvases, a sizeable print collection, and a range of other objects of key art and anthropological interest, supported by a small library and range of journals and object files. The student will develop a thesis relating closely to these collections, seeking to intervene in four current scholarly debates:
* marine painting
* Victorian whaling
* interdisciplinary craft studies
* interdisciplinary animal studies.
The research will focus on the legal protection of the underwater cultural heritage (UCH), with a particular emphasis on the possibilities to develop a common regimen for that legal protection among the EU States Members and to be applied in EU waters (i.e. up to 200nm). Current legislation at all levels —international, European, national and regional—, directly or indirectly affecting UCH will be analyzed and proposals for legislative coordination and integration would be made to all stakeholders concerned (EU institutions and Governments, among others).
At the deadline for the submission of proposals (10/09/2015), researchers:
• shall be in possession of a doctoral degree in Law, with a PhD in International or EU Law, or have at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience.
• PhD or previous research experience on UCH, heritage law, law of the sea or maritime law will be an asset.
• must not have resided or carried out their main activities in the country of Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the above mentioned deadline.
Following the success of the University of Geneva Terra Submersa expedition in 2014, the summer school offers an intensive course on a new, multidisciplinary scientific field: Continental Shelf Prehistoric Research (CSPR).
The course aims at educating postgraduate students and young scientists to move across the boundaries of marine geosciences and archaeology, in order to shed light on the interaction between our ancestors with the dynamically changing environment.
Assist in the excavation of a submerged Paleo-Indian site in Florida, including both underwater and terrestrial excavations. Most experienced applicant will serve as crew leader/supervisor.
Assist in set up of site area, surveying site boundaries, diving and managing underwater excavation equipment, use of screens, monitoring divers, managing air supply systems, identifying and logging cultural materials, and data collecting. Role of crew leader/supervisor (if applicable).

Education and Outreach Intern
Overview:
The Michigan Maritime Museum is seeking an intern interested in education and outreach initiatives at the museum campus in South Haven Michigan. This is a unique opportunity to work with a small non-profit museum with a focus in education. Candidates should have an interest in event development, have strong organizational skills, and be comfortable working with the public in both organized and informal situations. Education interns will interact with the public on a daily basis and should be able to inspire excitement and interest in Michigan maritime history and the facilities and exhibits on the Museum campus. Education interns must be able to perform the below responsibilities alongside museum staff and will report directly to the Director of Education and Administration. The internship will provide an introduction to standard museum practice and provide a hands-on experience in museum work.

Overview:
The Michigan Maritime Museum is seeking an intern interested in marketing and design. Interns will have the opportunity to be exposed to a variety of museum marketing efforts including visitor profile research, media campaigns, print media, media relations, and the creative process. Marketing/Design interns must be able to perform the below responsibilities alongside museum staff and will report directly to the Director of Education and Administration. Marketing/Design interns will be given several short-term projects that will enhance their understanding and development in the field of marketing, public relations, and non-profit museum management.

Archives and Collections Intern
Overview:
The Michigan Maritime Museum is seeking an intern interested in archives and collections at the Marialyce Canonie Great Lakes Research Library in South Haven Michigan. This is an exceptional opportunity to work in the only library and archive in the state that is dedicated to the entire scope of Michigan maritime history. Archive interns will interact with researchers and the public and should assist in maintaining the library and collections’ reputation for research. Candidates should be interested in the long-term preservation of collections, able to work independently, and have strong organizational skills. Archive Interns must be able to perform the responsibilities listed below alongside museum staff/volunteers and will report directly to the Director of Education and Administration. This internship will provide an introduction to museum and archival practice and will provide hands-on experience in collections.

Padnos Boatshed Intern
Overview:
The Michigan Maritime Museum is seeking an intern interested in working in our Padnos boatshed located on the scenic Black River in South Haven. This is an exciting opportunity to work with the repair and maintenance of historic and classic wooden vessels as well as interact with the public to promote and convey traditional boatbuilding practices. Candidates should have a strong interest in woodworking and vessel design/repair. Boatshed Interns will work alongside museum staff and volunteers and interact with the public on a daily basis. Therefore, candidates must have solid communication skills and be able to instill interest and excitement for the topics they will be discussing. Boatshed interns will also be responsible for various projects in and around the Museum that will include exhibit maintenance/construction, providing dockhand support when needed, and a variety of daily tasks laid forth by Museum staff. The Boatshed intern will report directly the Director of Education and Administration and will be overseen by the Padnos Boatshed Director. This internship will proved an introduction into traditional watercraft building and management at a small non-profit located at a picturesque shop on the water’s edge.

Deckhand: Friends Good Will is looking for deckhands for the 2015 sailing season. Duties include sailing Friends Good Will for education sails, public day sails, and private charters, vessel maintenance, and short shifts in the museum gift shop. Pay is hourly and depends on experience. This is not a liveaboard position. The season runs from May-September.
Senior Deckhand/ Relief Captain: Friends Good Will is looking for a Senior Deckhand/ Relief Captain for the 2015 sailing season. Duties include sailing as Senior Deckhand for public sails, vessel maintenance, occasional short shifts in the museum gift shop, and serving as Relief Captain for two days a week during the mid-summer. Requires a 100 Ton Great Lakes Master. Must have previous leadership experience as a mate or watch leader on similar size vessels. Pay is hourly and depends on experience. This is not a liveaboard position. The season runs from May-September.
Shipboard Education Coordinator/Deckhand: Friends Good Will is seeking a Shipboard Education Coordinator/Deckhand for the 2015 sailing season. Duties include working with the Captain and Museum Director of Education to coordinate shipboard education programs and volunteer educators/crew, coordinating children’s themed sails during the summer months, and performing regular deckhand duties as assigned by the captain. Previous shipboard or outdoor education experience is required. Pay is hourly and depends on experience. This is not a liveaboard position. The season runs from May-September.

This position is located at the United States Naval Academy Museum, located in Annapolis, MD. The purpose of the U.S. Naval Academy Museum is to protect, preserve, and present the material history of the United States Naval Academy which creates an image of a National Center of Excellence. This position serves as the registrar and collections manager and will assist higher level museum staff with the care and management of art, artifacts, books, prints, photographs, and two-dimensional materials in the museum’s collections that contribute to an understanding and appreciation of the naval history of the Naval Academy. This position will be filled at either the GS-07 or GS-09 level with a full performance level of GS-09.
Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking a part-time Maritime Archaeologist with a minimum of 5 years of direct archaeological experience for our Sparks, Maryland office. This position is project specific with the potential for additional work that could lead to a full-time position.
The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team comprised of archaeologists, architectural historians, historians, environmental scientists, engineers and planners focused on existing client support, new business development, and internal staff mentoring. The preferred candidate will enjoy a variety of working conditions ranging from field efforts to office analysis, report writing and agency interactions.
A Master’s Degree in Archaeology from an accredited school along with a minimum of five years of relevant experience. A degree is Maritime Archaeology is preferred. This position is the Watercraft Center Manager at the N.C. Maritime Museum in Beaufort, N.C. in its Harvey W. Smith Watercraft Center. Responsibilities include overseeing the watercraft center’s physical plant; maintaining and replenishing shop equipment and materials; supervising day-to-day activities in the watercraft center in cooperation with the boatbuilder; overseeing the physical condition of the museum’s in-the-water fleet of traditional watercraft; support related museum groups such as the Traditional Small Craft Association & the Carolina Maritime Model Society. The Alan Pearsall Fellowship, administered by the Institute, is awarded for postdoctoral research into any aspect of Naval or Maritime History, anywhere in the world, from the fall of the Roman Empire in the West to the present day. The stipend for this award will be £22,784 for the 2015–16 session.
4) Museum Educator, USS Constitution
Educators at the USS Constitution Museum work in a highly visible position that is essential to fulfilling the Museum’s mission of creating a positive, memorable experience where visitors can learn and connect to history. This seasonal part-time position is responsible for welcoming and providing exceptional customer service to our visitors; facilitating a range of hands-on interpretive programs for different audiences, including families and Pre K-12th grade students; and encouraging visitors to voluntarily donate to the Museum. As a part of the Museum Learning department, you will be trained in interpretation techniques, customer service, and USS Constitution’s history.
