Cardinal Point Captains, Inc. (CPC) is seeking an experienced and well-qualified research specialist with an emphasis on scientific communication and outreach for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary (MPNMS) in Maryland. MPNMS encompasses 18 square miles of the Potomac River and is the location of more than 100 historic World War I era vessels. These vessels are inseparable from the ecology, providing habitat for birds and fish that attract recreational enthusiasts. MPNMS is co-managed by the State of Maryland and Charles County, MD. Together, and in partnership with the network of organizations in the Chesapeake Bay region, they conduct scientific research, monitoring, exploration, education and outreach activities. The goals are to preserve submerged historic resources and expand awareness of local cultural heritage, to facilitate recreation and to promote tourism and economic opportunity, and to expand engagement and opportunity for generations of diverse and indigenous communities.

A qualified person is required to meet the demands of scientific research, analysis and communication of scientific information, partnership and network development, formal and informal education, and to broaden the diversity of public engagement and stewardship.

Tasks

  • Support science activities at the sanctuary including characterization, monitoring and research related to historic, heritage and ecological resources and expand partnerships that support those activities
  • Support data and information analyses including data management and archiving, GIS and data visualization, and integration with other data and scientific networks
  • Develop science communication products, including social and web-based media content, and integrate with other major media networks
  • Expand partnerships to support formal and informal education, with emphasis on STEM, programs related to advanced technologies, and outdoor learning experiences
  • Develop and coordinate public outreach events that showcase sanctuary partnerships and programs
  • Expand partnerships and coordinate volunteer activities related to science, education, and stewardship including in-situ activities at the sanctuary.
  • Expand partnerships that enhance awareness and opportunity for underserved and under-represented community groups
  • Develop strategy and timeline for relevant grants and other funding and resource leveraging opportunities. Successfully compete for at least one grant.
  • Support or represent ONMS MPNMS in related intra- and inter-agency meetings and partnerships related to scientific research, stewardship, outreach, and field operations.
  • Support sanctuary meetings and work sessions by coordinating agenda, logistics, recording and preparing outputs, tracking projects, and facilitating sessions
  • As required, assist Monitor NMS and other national marine sanctuaries in the Eastern Region in planning and implementing science, education and outreach programs
  • Develop monthly and annual accomplishments report related to sanctuary activities

. Requirements:

Required certifications and experience

  • Possess a Master’s Degree or PhD in a related field (e.g., Conservation Science, Archaeology)
  • Experience developing and coordinating science activities, GIS analysis, and data management
  • Experience and active partnerships with the Chesapeake Bay Program, Maryland DNR and/or Maryland Historical Trust
  • Experience and active partnerships with diverse and underserved community organizations
  • Extensive experience with strategic partnerships, consensus building, and program management leading to meaningful outcomes
  • Demonstrable written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience and active partnerships related to STEM instruction and advanced technologies
  • Basic open water and public safety skills, including experience with kayaking and first aid
  • Proven and successful grant writing and leveraging financial resources
  • Proven success to leverage internships, volunteers and other staffing options
  • Able to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds to assist transporting equipment and gear.
