Egypt launches photography competition to promote underwater cultural heritage

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has launched a photography competition to raise public awareness of Egypt’s rich underwater cultural heritage.

The competition, which begins Friday, 1 August, invites participants to capture artistic images of artefacts that emerged from the Mediterranean Sea and are currently on display at the Graeco-Roman Museum and the Alexandria National Museum in Alexandria.

It comes in light of Egypt’s efforts to highlight its submerged archaeological treasures aligning with its commitment to the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage.

“The competition is part of broader efforts to engage the public with Egypt’s diverse heritage and to promote appreciation for historical finds recovered from beneath the Mediterranean,” said Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy. 

He added that this initiative reflects the ministry’s ongoing dedication to enhancing awareness and appreciation of underwater cultural heritage and to showcasing Egypt’s unique archaeological assets to the world.

According to Mohamed Ismail Khaled, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), the competition is one of several cultural events planned by the ministry to shed light on submerged heritage sites and artefacts.

He continued that the photographers in Egypt and abroad are eligible to participate, with a photography window open from August 1 to 10 August, during the official operating hours of both museums in Alexandria. Submissions must be sent to training@mota.gov.eg by Thursday, 14 August, and must include the photograph along with a short biography of the participant.

Photos will be evaluated by a specialized jury comprising university professors and experts in photography and archaeology. The panel will operate under the supervision of the competition’s technical secretariat.

Ahmed Rahima, Assistant Minister for Human Resources Development and Head of the Central Training Unit, explained that evaluation criteria will focus on technical quality, creativity, and the ability to highlight the aesthetic and historical value of the featured artefacts. The names of the winners will be announced on 18 August, with an official award ceremony scheduled for 21 August.

The ministry has extended an open invitation to both Egyptian and international photography enthusiasts to take part in this unique cultural initiative, which blends art, history, and heritage preservation.

OPC is Hiring a Tribal Affairs and Community Engagement Specialist – Apply by August 27, 2025

The California Ocean Protection Council (OPC) is hiring a Staff Services Manager I (Specialist) to lead and foster tribal affairs and coastal community engagement related to state ocean and coastal programs in California.  

The Tribal Affairs and Community Engagement Specialist will be responsible for facilitating collaborative and coordinated state agency efforts to consult with California Native American tribes and engage with coastal communities on priority topics impacting California’s coast and ocean to ensure OPC programs reflect tribal and community needs. The incumbent will additionally support OPC’s Tribal Liaison on OPC’s broader tribal consultation and engagement efforts. Overall, the incumbent will be responsible for implementation of OPC’s mission and CNRA priorities on ocean and coastal matters.

Applicants should have a strong tribal affairs and/or community engagement and outreach experience, internal and public meeting facilitation experience, working knowledge of coastal and ocean issues and stakeholders in California, and excellent written and verbal communication skills. The ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks is a must. Proficiency reading and speaking Spanish are preferred, but not required.

Review the minimum qualifications for a Staff Services Manager I (Specialist), including necessary education and experience. Completion of the Staff Services Manager I (Specialist) State Civil Service Examination is required, and exam scores must rank in the top three tiers within the applicant pool to be further considered in the application process.

This position is considered Remote-Centered, which means incumbent would telework 50% or more of the time within a work month from an alternate work location. The position incumbent can telework with a management approved telework agreement and schedule. OPC staff are required to work from CNRA headquarters located in Sacramento, CA a minimum of two days a week, on Mondays and Tuesdays.

DSAC BURSARIES FOR HERITAGE RELATED STUDIES: 2024

Archaeology (exclusively with a focus on marine and underwater cultural heritage, and forensic)

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture invites applications for bursaries from institutions accredited and registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training for students who wish to pursue studies in heritage related programmes.

Eligibility

  • South African citizenship;
  • Letter of provisional acceptance / letter of admission from the institution;
  • Not older than forty (40) years;
  • Outstanding / satisfactory academic performance (academic progress report if already at an institution) or (Grade 12 if you are a 1st year student);
  • Field of study (heritage related)
  • Not employed full time by government, state agencies or private sector with a salary of more than R350 000.
  • Students who are beneficiaries of other bursaries or donors for the 2024 academic year will only be considered if tuition fee at the said university or institution exceeds the DSAC’s threshold by at least 10% upwards.
