Underwater Archeologist (Archaeologist II) Position
The Maritime Research Division of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina, Columbia is seeking an Underwater Archaeologist (Archaeologist II). The position is full-time with benefits and will work out of our field office in Charleston, South Carolina. The position is open until 1 December 2014. We hope to offer the position by mid-December with a start date by January or February 2015. The successful candidate will complete a team of four members and complement our efforts to study and preserve the maritime archaeological legacy in the rivers and coastal waters of South Carolina.
Underwater Archaeologist (Archaeologist II):
The employee will direct and coordinate public outreach and educational offerings by the MRD. The position also supervises the Hobby Diver License program through oversight of license and report processing, site and collection assessments, and other aspects of the program. In addition to these primary duties, the underwater archaeologist participates in research projects and will act in the capacity of principal/co-principal investigator as appropriate and present findings through various professional and public avenues. The employee will seek funding and grant opportunities to support MRD activities and objectives. The employee will oversee all components of the Charleston field office including oversight of finances, office and field equipment, two boats, and one vehicle. The position is supervisory—managing one employee. This position requires periodic travel for fieldwork, presentations, and meetings, including working on weekends as needed. The incumbent reports directly to the state underwater archaeologist. The successful candidate will also meet SCIAA’s Dive Safety & Control Board scientific diving requirements.

The scholarship is aimed at the students in the programme (Field Archaeology on Land and under the Sea), regardless of their admission year. The successful candidate must demonstrate a genuine interest in maritime archaeology and a clear intention to write a dissertation about a maritime subject, preferably concerning the eastern Mediterranean.
Only one scholarship per year is offered.
Entry requirements:
Selection will be based on ranking of the applicant’s previous diplomas as well as on their ability to convince the committee of their capacity to conduct research of high standards. Experience in maritime archaeology projects will be considered as an additional qualification.
Application procedure:
Applications are invited every year in October with a deadline of January 31st of the following year. The results are announced within a month, i.e. in February.
The application should be in English and include the following:
Curriculum Vitae.
A research statement (up to 600 words) where the candidate¹s special interest in maritime archaeology should be explained.
Previous diplomas or distinctions.
Two reference letters from academics or field archaeologists, preferably with a maritime background.
The committee holds the right not to award a scholarship in any given year, if none of the candidates has the required qualifications.
The grant will be given in three (3) payments:
(i) £3,000 before the term starts;
(ii) £3,000 after the first three courses are successfully completed, with
an average mark of at least 7.5/10;
(iii) £4,000 after the remaining three courses are successfully completed,
with an average mark of at least 7.5/10.

Maritime Project Officer
In response to our growing reputation in the offshore renewables sector Headland Archaeology would like to further enhance our maritime and marine team by appointing a Maritime Project Officer. Over the past couple of years our marine services department has witnessed an increased workload and has enjoyed a growing reputation for providing high quality marine services for large scale projects throughout the UK and Ireland and we are currently undertaking offshore projects in the territorial waters of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, and France. The successful applicant will join Headlands Consultancy team in Edinburgh and contribute towards the production of Cultural Heritage/ Environmental Impact Assessments and similar documents. A good knowledge and experience of marine heritage issues would be a definite advantage, but we would also consider people with the ability to assess marine geophysical data and use the associated software packages (including ArcGIS).

· Must meet all physical requirements for offshore certification.
