We have an opportunity for a Heritage Consultant to join our expanding UK Environmental team. This position could be considered on a part time basis, minimum of 22.5 hours per week.

You will be an enthusiastic, optimistic, conscientious with excellent communication skills and a minimum of 2 years experience specifically in work place heritage and archaeological practice or consultancy. Direct experience of marine and coastal heritage consultancy is preferable, although individuals with experience of working as a marine archaeologist with an interest in pursuing a career in consultancy will also be considered.

You will need to efficient and enjoy the challenge of a growth-orientated environment. Able to work in a team and, at times, independently. The role will require close working with members of the heritage team, various environmental teams across the UK and in Europe, as well as with staff across other Business Lines. Willingness to contribute to multi-disciplinary teams will be key to the successful execution of the role. You will also contribute proactively to ensure consulting services are consistently delivered to the highest standards, meeting and exceeding clients’ needs.

The position will be within a small but growing historic environment (heritage) team, as part of the wider multi-disciplinary environment team.

As a marine heritage consultant you will be expected to undertake, archaeological desk-based assessments, conduct site visits and walkovers and monitor site works (coastal and intertidal), deliver tool box talks and presentations to on-site construction teams, prepare method statements and WSIs, and produce and compile marine historic environment (marine archaeology and cultural heritage) ES chapters associated with the coastal, intertidal and offshore elements of both large and small scale development planning projects.

Additionally, the role will support promoting the heritage service offering, as and when required, via assistance with marketing materials and presentations to help ensure and maintain a continual turnover of heritage related work.

Project involvement typically includes offshore renewables, coastal defence and flood alleviation schemes, port and harbour developments (including capital dredging) and other industrial developments.

The Koç University Mustafa V. Koç Maritime Archeology Research Center (KUDAR) and Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) joint fellowship will support a post-doctoral or senior scholar specializing in Maritime Archeology or a closely-related topic for the 2020–2021 nine-month academic year (September 21st to June 15th). The successful applicant is required to reside in Istanbul during the fellowship period, to devote her/his time to a proposed research project, and to deliver three lectures on their original research.  The fellowship provides one round-trip ticket to Istanbul, accommodation at ANAMED in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu neighborhood, five meals a week, and a monthly stipend. While in residence, the successful applicant will be able to take advantage of a limited research budget, the ANAMED seminar and study rooms, library resources within the Koç University system, and access to nearby research centers such as the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, the Institut Français d’Études Anatoliennes, and the Instituto Italiano di Cultura. Applications from scholars of all nationalities are encouraged, but fellows must be proficient in English, the language of instruction at Koç University.

Established in honor of Mustafa V. Koç, the Koç University Maritime Archeology Research Center (KUDAR) supports and promotes Turkish and international scholars conducting high-impact research on maritime archeology, history, ethnography, heritage management, artifact conservation, and other practices concerned with the relationship between society and the sea.  The center prioritizes research in the Social Sciences, primarily Archeology, but also Anthropology, Human Geography, and similar disciplines. The center may also encompass efforts that include the applied and natural sciences, such as Oceanography or Marine Biology, provided such research generates high-impact results that contribute to the center’s overall focus.

This Lake Phelps Canoes (LPC) Conservator position, based at the Queen Anne’s Revenge (QAR) Lab within the Office of State Archaeology (OSA) in DNCR’s Historic Resources Division, is critical to meet the goals of DNCR’s Collections Conservation, Diversity and Access mission; through conservation, documentation, analysis, associated research, and preparation for the eventual return of two Lake Phelps Canoes to exhibit at Pettigrew State Park, Visitor Center. This is a DNCR collaborative project between Pettigrew State Park, and OSA within DNCR’s Historic Resources Division. OSA bears primary responsibilities for protection and interpretation of thousands of underwater archaeological sites in North Carolina, including the Queen Anne’s Revenge/LaConcorde shipwreck. Pettigrew State Park preserves the natural environment around Lake Phelps and interprets the American Indian experience in the area, most notably concerning the construction and use of dugout canoes. This position is critical for completing the active re-treatment of historically significant Native American canoes recovered from Lake Phelps by ECU and OSA in the mid 1980’s. The LPC Conservator, will be an archaeological conservation professional and will have training and experience in the conservation of archaeological artifacts made of wood from recovery to conservation to exhibit.  The employee will work cooperatively with the OSA QAR Lab team and with Pettigrew State Park staff, and other DNCR staff, partners, and volunteers. The LPC Conservator will undertake all aspects of documentation (including photography and illustration), examination, conservation, analysis, and study, and preparation of the Lake Phelps canoes for exhibit at Pettigrew State Park.  Duties will include but not be limited to: documentation of wood canoes; examination and condition assessment of canoes including visual examination, microscopy, SEM analyses (as available at ECU), treatment of artifacts using or adapting proposed established and approved methodologies; maintenance and operation of conservation lab facilities and equipment; compliance with DNCR and ECU environmental health and safety requirements; maintaining written, computer and photographic documentation of artifacts and their treatments; reports on work undertaken of artifacts; preparation of  archive (artifacts and records for transfer to museum); supervision and training of student interns and volunteers; participation in public education and outreach activities, such as lab tours, presentations, seminars, and web site. The LPC Conservator will be a member of the DNCR QAR Lab team in Greenville, NC, located at East Carolina University’s West Research Campus.
