University of Florida and the Florida Aquarium, The Assistant Research Scientist is expected to develop an extramurally funded and internationally recognized research program in the field of marine and coastal science as evidenced by the production of peer-reviewed journal articles and the successful application, management and execution of grants and other fundraising initiatives. The focus of the research will be on marine and coastal science issues which support the management and sustainability of the state’s multi-billion dollar saltwater sport fishing industry and currently established and future conservation and research initiatives associated with The Florida Aquarium.

Specific research topics might include, but are not limited to, coral culture and restoration, marine fish breeding, dolphin ID, marine archaeology, and coastal and marine habitat conservation, e.g., coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangrove stands.

Development of innovative solutions for the diagnostics and the conservation of underwater cultural heritage:
The main goal of the research is the study of innnovative solutions for supporting the in-situ conservation of underwater cultural heritage. The candidate will participate to the design and manufacturing of some prototypes of tools to be mounted on ROV or used by scuba divers. The activity includes the support to the experimentation of the devices in an underwater archaeological site in order to validate the tools.

The University of California, Santa Barbara, invites applications for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship (2013-14) in marine environmental history, broadly conceived. Applicants should have interdisciplinary interests but may specialize in historical or political ecology or geography, cultural, contemporary, or environmental history, or the histories of science, art, or literature. The fellowship will be part of a temporary research center in marine environmental history funded through a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s John E. Sawyer seminar series, which supports collaborative and comparative scholarship on the “historical and cultural sources of contemporary developments.” The fellow will not teach courses, but will assist in the organization of public events, study groups, and symposia, as well as the production of publications related to the center’s activities.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to help with outreach and educational programming to reach the diverse groups that use Thunder Bay NMS. To fill this position, we will be looking for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment and is able to manage multiple tasks and communicate very well through both public speaking and writing. A successful candidate should also be comfortable working with diverse audiences both indoors and outdoors.

This course is an intensive introduction to materials science, deterioration processes in marine environments, pre-disturbance conservation surveys, in-situ conservation and stabilisation, recovery, initial storage, stabilisation and transportation of artefacts, and the storage and display of conserved artefacts.  It is designed to provide students with a general theoretical and practical background to archaeological conservation for both marine and terrestrial environments.  It should also equip archaeologists with the appropriate conservation knowledge and skills necessary for the effective management of submerged cultural heritage.

The WDHOF/Cecelia Connelly Memorial Scholarship in Underwater Archaeology

A $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to a deserving woman undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in an accredited course of study in the field of Underwater Archaeology. The scholarship is intended to assist with college tuition/fees or field study costs and is open to candidates worldwide. Undergraduate students are required to have an overall GPA of 2.5 or better, graduate students a 3.0 or better, and must be in good standing with their academic institutions. First year graduate students may submit verification of a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 from their final year as an undergraduate. There is no applicant age limit.

The Village of Lake George, on behalf of the Village of Freeport and the Cities of Dunkirk, Geneva, Oswego, and Plattsburgh, (“the Participating Communities”), is developing a pilot project to create the New York State Underwater Blueway Trail, with funds provided under Title 11 of the Environmental Protection Fund through New York State Department of State.

The Village is soliciting proposals from qualified consultants and/or individuals to provide professional project management and consulting services to oversee and coordinate the activities of the Participating Communities in executing the workplan associated with this project.

A pre-submission meeting will be held in the offices of the Village of Lake George at 11:00 am on Friday, October 26th, 2012, at which time a review of the project will be conducted, followed by a question and answer session.

The Request for Qualifications which includes the scope of work and instructions for submission, as well as the text of the work program, can be obtained from the Lake George Village Clerk.

Proposals must be received by 12:00 noon on Friday, November 9th, 2012.

The Alfred H. Howell Endowed Chair in History and Archaeology

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Beirut seeks an established scholar of prominent standing in his/her field of specialization for visiting appointment to the Alfred H. Howell Endowed Chair in History and Archaeology.

In History, the applicant will be a recognized senior academic specializing either in classical Islamic history or in the modern history of the Middle East in such areas, for example, as legal history and jurisprudence or in socio-economic, intellectual and cultural studies. In Archaeology, the applicant will be an acknowledged senior academic specializing in areas not currently covered by the department, including Egyptology, the archaeology of Mesopotamia and/ or Iran, the archaeology of pre-Islamic Arabia and the Gulf, Islamic, environmental or marine archaeology. Applicants who have experience in teaching archaeological methodology and theory are particularly welcome.

In addition to the normal functions associated with the occupancy of a Chair at AUB, candidates are expected to teach two undergraduate or graduate courses per semester, supervise student research and MA or, in the case of History, PhD theses. The language of instruction is English. The period of visiting appointment is one to two years. The appointment is to begin on September 1, 2013.
