Archaeologist on HMS Victory

The National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN) is recruiting for an Archaeologist to join the Historic Ships team within the Heritage Directorate. This is a full time (37.5 hours per week) permanent position.

This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the NMRN’s conservation approach to HMS Victory; the world’s only surviving first rate line of battle ship. Working as part of a team, this role will ensure the work to HMS Victory sets new standards for ship conservation.

Key Opportunities:

To undertake the first comprehensive archaeological investigation of the ship.

Become the leading expert on the fabric of HMS Victory.

Share new knowledge of the ship with visitors, staff, volunteers, etc.

Ensure the conservation work on the ship protects what makes HMS Victory significant.

Build a team of volunteers to support this exciting new adventure.


Applicants must have experience of working on-site in an historic ship/historic building environment or experience of working with industrial collections.

The applicant must possess an appropriate professional qualification at degree level or higher or equivalent.
