Job Description:
Lowell’s Boat Shop is seeking an educator to coordinate and manage school group visits during the upcoming school year; focus is on the construction of a whaleboat to be carried aboard the whale ship Charles W. Morgan, sailing from Mystic Seaport in 2013. Candidate will design, schedule, and run hands-on, place based education programs for 5th through 12th graders and adults with the help of museum volunteers, and work with education committees, community advisory groups, and Boat Shop staff to meet the needs of students and local teachers.

Job Duties: 

1. Research, develop and select educational materials; define instruction methods
2. Coordinate with local schools, school boards, students, and LBS staff
3. Supervise and mentor education interns and volunteers
4. Organize spaces for learning and manage use of site; maintain a clean, orderly and safe environment; establish first aid and emergency evacuation procedures
5. Develop an annual budget for program, aligning expenditures with Grants Policies and Procedures where applicable
6. Coordinate all whaleboat education activities at museum:
a. Set up systems: files, resources for teachers, administration records, etc
b. Create lesson plans and execute them, assuring compliance with local and state education standards
c. Recruit students and coordinate transportation
d. Maintain and regularly assess programs
7. Develop activities that recognize and honor students, staff, and community volunteers for their service and accomplishments

Job Requirements:

1. M.A. or strong background in education, experience in curriculum development and/or teaching
2. Ability to delegate, collaborate and communicate effectively, manage student behavior and resolve conflict, and work within deadlines
3. Knowledge of LBS mission and willingness to help out with other museum activities when appropriate
4. Flexibility, patience, and sense of humor
