Marine Geologist/Geophysicist |On-Call| Pensacola, Florida

Join our team as an on-call or full-time Marine Geologist/Geophysicist in Pensacola, FL, or remotely (depending on your qualifications and availability). You will be part of a growing and close-knit group, supporting Marine Archaeology and Environmental Operations both in the U.S. and internationally. We seek self-motivated individuals with a strong passion for professional growth and a desire to stay up to date with the latest technological advancements. Your main responsibilities will include acquiring, processing, and interpreting high-resolution marine geophysical data, including sidescan sonars, sub-bottom profilers, magnetometers, and geotechnical samples. Experience with multibeam data collection and processing is an asset. This role requires travel and work in various environments. 

Hire Type: Hourly, as-needed     
Schedule: 40 hours, Monday–Friday (flexible schedule)   
Location: On-site – Pensacola, FL office or Remote – work from home 

Responsibilities  

  • Contribute to an ever-growing team by adding a strong marine geological and geophysical skillset. 
  • Participate in offshore and coastal marine archaeology and environmental projects. 
  • Act as field or processing marine geophysicist or geologist in coastal and offshore environments. 
  • Plan field operations with the use of various navigation and GIS software . 
  • Maintain and design daily field logs and safety logs. 
  • Collect and interpret geophysical data and analyze geotechnical samples, including but not limited to other scientific data. 
  • Provide quality data checks for geophysical and geotechnical data. 
  • Communicate technical standards and operations through proposals, reports, presentations, or to other individual personnel such as associates, community, or clients. 
  • Analyze and comply with operational standards and procedures. 
  • Work in and show experiences with various geophysical equipment including sidescan sonars, sub-bottom sonars, magnetometers as well as geotechnical equipment. Multibeam is preferred. 
  • Work to analyze sediment samples. 
  • Perform equipment tests before field operations, as well as onsite and office troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of marine equipment. 
  • Perform mobilization, calibrations/checks, surveys, and demobilizations. 
  • Show a high level of safe practices with all marine operations. 
  • Scientific Diving, Rescue Diver, and Divemaster is a plus. 
  • Show willingness and desire to grow oneself professionally while staying up to date with today’s technological needs. 
  • Open to travel and extended field assignments in offshore or coastal environments. 
  • Show ability to work with a wide range of personnel including those of varying cultures, and religions from various regions around the globe. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Required Qualifications 

  • 3+ years of relevant professional work experience in marine, land, and aerial geophysical systems 
  • Degree in geology, marine science, marine archaeology, or related field of study. 
  • 3+ years of experience with analysis and technical report writing 
  • Working knowledge and understanding of operations and maintenance of geophysical, marine and land equipment. 
  • Experience troubleshooting and repair of electronic and software programming. 
  • Experience in cable splicing and soldering, use of diagnostic equipment, and communications systems. 
  • Experience with boat handling and working on larger vessels 
  • Experience with geophysical systems (including chirp sub-bottom, sidescan sonar, magnetometer)  
  • Proficiency towards marine geophysical data acquisition and interpretation software such as SonarWiz, Hypack, Qinsy, Oasis Montaj and Discover. 
  • Proficiency in the use of QGIS, ArcGis, or Surfer software. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders 
  • Valid state driver’s license. 
  • Travel to survey projects both within the US and overseas. 
  • Current U.S. Passport 

Preferred Skills 

  • Fluent in various acquisition and processing software such as Hypack, Qinsy, Sonarwiz, Kingdom, Radex, and/or Oasis Montaj. 
  • Experience with Multibeam and high-resolution GPS units such as PosMV 
  • Marine geotechnical experience (vibracore, sediment analyses, etc.) is a plus. 
  • Strong ability to work as part of an ever-growing team to assist team members, lead, follow or work independently. 

Physical And Mental Requirements and Work Environment 

  • Regular fieldwork or on-site inspections are required, which necessitates ability to frequently travel/drive a vehicle (sight, hearing, and manual manipulation of driving mechanisms), cognitive ability to plan travel, use maps or GPS navigation systems. 
  • May require ambulation and movement to enable walking or hiking 10+ miles per day on rough and/or hazardous terrain and occasional climbing, crouching, kneeling, balancing on rough terrain. Fieldwork may involve exposure to conditions of rain, sun, heat, wind, dust, etc., with exposure to animals, plants, wet conditions, biting insects, poison oak, etc. May require use of respiratory equipment. 
  • Some fieldwork may require carrying loads up to 25 pounds or work around heavy construction equipment. 
  • Vision is required to observe environmental phenomena and record and translate observations into text (either keyboard entry on a computer or dictation and audio translation of recording to Standard English scientific text). 
  • Mental requirements include ability to organize one’s own work or that of crew members; ability to recognize and observe scientific data and analyze data as well as ability to perform calculations. Must also be able to observe social and professional interactions and respond appropriately. 
  • Some work is performed primarily in an indoor environment and requires sustained sitting and use of fingers, hands, and arms to operate a computer and perform keyboard entry of data or document preparation (or equivalent with accommodation). Must also be able to operation standard office equipment (phone, copy machine, FAX machine, etc.)
