Research area and project description:
Candidates are invited to apply for a PhD fellowship focused on submerged paleolandscape analysis primarily by means of high-resolution marine geophysical data and sediment cores, with possibilities of utilizing numerical modeling approaches and machine learning. 

The successful candidate will become part of the RisingSea research group working to assess and quantify the preservation degree of drowned paleolandscapes and the response of low-topography landscapes and environments to rising sea level. More broadly, the project aims to utilize the geological archives of the eastern North Sea Basin to develop our basic understanding and reference framework for how low-topography landscapes and environments respond to rising sea level and climate change over longer time scales.

One of the main objectives of the research group is to establish a Drowned Paleolandscape Atlas, where the geophysical characteristics of specific preserved landscape types are described, and seismic morphologies are linked to various paleoenvironments. The PhD candidate will contribute to this work.

The PhD candidate will use seismo-acoustic data and sediment cores to study the geological processes that are prevalent during flooding and sea-level rise. The results will be of relevance for future climate mitigation and adaptions, sustainable use of the coastal zones, offshore windfarm constructions and geo-archaeology.

The project involves offshore fieldwork opportunities and close collaboration with research and industry partners both nationally and internationally; – including universities and research institutions in the United Kingdom, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. The PhD project will preferably include a research visit to one of the collaborating institutions.

The PhD position is funded by the Carlsberg Foundation.

VLIZ recruits: PhD Researcher Marine Geology

Background

We offer a 4-year PhD student position to map and reconstruct the Pleistocene palaeolandscapes of the outer Belgian Continental Shelf (BCS), their evolution through time and connection with adjacent regional palaeolandscapes of the Netherlands, France and the UK. As a PhD researcher you will use state-of-the-art acoustic techniques (high-resolution reflection seismic profiling, ultra-high-resolution sub-bottom profiling and multibeam bathymetric mapping), complemented by sediment (vibro)coring. In recent years a large amount of new acoustic and geotechnical data have been obtained in this area, which are of unprecedented resolution and quality and reveal for the first time that much more of the Pleistocene deposits have been preserved than previously thought. This opens perspectives to reconstruct the palaeo environmental evolution of the area during the Pleistocene, a period for which there are still many questions. As a PhD researcher, you will be based at the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ, Ostend) and enrolled at Ghent University (Department of Geology). The PhD supervisors will be Dr. Tine Missiaen, Dr. Ruth Plets and Dr Thomas Mestdagh (VLIZ) and Prof. Marc De Batist (UGent).

Candidate profile

  • MSc in Geology, Earth Sciences, Physical Geography, or an equivalent degree in related fields pertinent to the research project. An MSc degree is required at the start of the appointment.
  • A keen interest in marine geology, interpretation of marine geophysical data, palaeo-environmental reconstruction. Prior experience (e.g. via master thesis) in one or more of these topics is desirable.
  • Willingness to participate in multi-day marine surveys.
  • Good organizational and interpersonal skills; a team player.
  • Excellent communication skills in English – both orally and written.
  • Highly motivated to conduct scientific research.
  • Critical and creative.

The role – what’s involved?

Wessex Archaeology is a key partner in the offshore renewables industry providing heritage sector support at all stages from EIA to Operations and Maintenance for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects.

We are seeking to employ a talented professional to the role of Marine Geoscientist with a background in marine geosciences (Quaternary geology, geophysical interpretation) and palaeolandscape research to work as part of a collaborative team in supporting offshore renewable energy projects. You will work alongside colleagues in the GeoServices directorate (including Geoarchaeology and Environmental) and Coastal and Marine and Consultancy teams on an exciting range of projects located both within UK waters and internationally.

You will be experienced and confident in the interpretation and integration of marine geophysical surveys (bathymetry, sub-bottom profiler, 2D and 3D seismic) with geotechnical and core data to identify Quaternary geomorphology and sedimentary sequences, with a solid understanding of marine and terrestrial depositional environments and processes.

A key part of the role will involve supporting, supervising, and providing training to colleagues as well as providing advice to teams across Wessex Archaeology and our external clients. In addition, you will contribute to tender documents under the supervision of the Marine Geophysics Manager, contribute to technical peer review and quality assurance and act as a subject matter expert in defined areas of expertise.

Previous experience of project management would be desirable, but training will be provided. Experience interpreting marine geophysical data would be advantageous. Previous experience of deposit modelling is desirable but not essential as training will be provided.

Main responsibilities will include:

  • Technical expertise for the Palaeolandscapes portfolio
  • Act as lead geoscientist on marine projects, including supervising and supporting colleagues, undertaking interpretation and reporting technical peer-review and quality assurance.
  • Prepare client reports, including liaising with other specialists.
  • Ability to act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and proactively engage with and advise colleagues and clients concerning technical aspects of projects.
  • Project management under the direction of the Geoarchaeology Manager, including responsibility for tender costs, project budgets and timescales/delivery.

The precise responsibilities of the role will depend on the grade at which the successful candidate is appointed.

Essential certification 

  • Hold a postgraduate qualification (PhD, Msc) in Quaternary Science, Geology, Geomorphology, Applied Geophysics or a closely related discipline;
  • Confident in geological interpretation of geophysical data (bathymetry, sub-bottom profiler, 2D and 3D seismic) using Kingdom and GIS software;
  • Confident in describing and interpreting Quaternary superficial sediments;
  • Sound knowledge of Quaternary geology, sea-level change, and marine and terrestrial depositional environments and processes;
  • Excellent report writing and communication skills.
