Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Maritime Archaeology, Memorial University

The Department of Archaeology at Memorial University invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in maritime archaeology (in the broadest sense and open to all technical/theoretical areas of expertise), subject to final budgetary approval. Primary Purpose of the Position:    
This is an advanced professional, administrative, and field position in evaluating and managing archaeological resources throughout the state. Employee directs projects in the conservation and management of historic and prehistoric archaeological sites, both on land and underwater, and at state-owned historic sites. Employee reviews project and technical evaluation reports form archaeological investigations by independent contractors or agencies and is responsible for planning and supervising field and laboratory work in excavation, analysis, exhibition, and publication of archaeological sites. This position is a specialist in underwater archaeology requiring specialized training in SCUBA diving, boat handling, marine remote sensing, and use of associated equipment.  Employee reports to a higher-level archaeologist or the state Archaeologist and performs related duties, as required. 

Key Responsibilities: 
Environmental Review: The employee is responsible for reviewing development projects related to state waters in all North Carolina counties in addition to terrestrial review in the coastal region. Federal or state compliance review regulations, plus instructions and procedures of the HPO and OSA, guide review activities. Duties may involve one or all of the following: Evaluation of proposed project plans relative to known or predicted archaeological sites in preparation of draft review letters to the responsible project supervisor, developer, or agency, technical consultations on, and if requested, preparation of formal scopes of work for investigations required to satisfy federal or state regulations; transfer of site and project data to maps and digital tracking systems; review of all documentation of investigations; preparation of formal opinions on significance and preservation/protection requirements for specific archaeological sites; close coordination of all phases of work with OSA and HPO staff meeting members, including maintenance of files, reports, map, and other project data.

The environmental review process is a primary required function of the Office of State Archaeology, in concert with the State Historic Preservation Office. Specific procedures are internally defined, and the process is conducted in accordance with federal and state historic preservation and environmental protection laws. Significant sums of public and private funds may be affected by the decisions made during the review process.

Field Archaeology and Site Recording: The employee is responsible for overseeing or participating in field investigations conducted at North Carolina submerged sites. This may include remote sensing surveys, diving investigations, site mapping, excavation, artifact recovery, record keeping, artifact analysis, data analysis, and report preparation. This will include data management for UAB records gathered from historic and modern charts, acoustic and magnetic surveys, archaeological and artifact drawings/images, site and artifact records, and related material.

Public Education and Outreach: Formal and informal presentations, tourists, and workshops are made upon request to civic, school, and professional organizations. Topics include general archaeology, prehistory, archaeological resource planning and management, or similar subjects. Diving Supervision and Equipment Management: This employee serves as a scientific diving supervisor and assistant diving safety officer ensuring all diving oversight duties, as delegated by the diving safety officer, are conducted in accordance with applicable diving regulations, standards, and procedures. This may include staff or volunteer diver training, maintenance of diver equipment records, ensuring all dive and accessory equipment is maintained in a safe and fully functional condition according to established schedules, and other related duties as assigned. Call for Applicants: KUDAR-ANAMED Joint Residential PhD Fellowship in Maritime Archaeology, 2024-25.

The Koç University Mustafa V. Koç Maritime Archaeology Research Center (KUDAR) and the Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) have opened the call for a Joint Residential PhD Fellowship specializing in Maritime Archaeology or a closely-related topic.  The successful applicant will receive a monthly stipend for the nine-month residency, in addition to accommodation and other benefits.  The successful applicant is required to reside in Istanbul during the nine-month fellowship period, to devote his/her time to their proposed research project, and to deliver three lectures on their original research.

The British Commission for Maritime History (BCMH) invites contributions to its twenty-ninth conference for new researchers. This year it will be held at the University of Strathclyde in the heart of Glasgow, a city transformed through maritime trade and shipbuilding from the early modern period onwards. This is an ideal location to hold this annual conference and provides a unique opportunity for new scholars to present their work in a historic setting.

The conference will also feature a keynote address by Professor Alison Cathcart, Professor of Early Modern Scottish and Archipelagic History at the University of Stirling, who will speak on “The ‘scattered isles in the polar ocean’: Scotland and the sea in the (long) sixteenth century.”

The Conference, which is supported by the Society for Nautical Research, helps emerging scholars who wish to share their work in a supportive environment and build relations with other maritime historians. We encourage applications from postgraduate students and warmly encourage participation by independent scholars. Contributions can address all aspects of maritime history in its broadest sense.

The Historian (TS-SCI Clearance) will support the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) to provide the fullest possible accounting for missing US service members from past conflicts.  During the Vietnam War, Special Forces operators – working under the designation of Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG) – documented their activities in post-mission After Action Reports (AARs).  Most of these documents are still marked as classified Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI).  These documents provide the most comprehensive record of special operations activities in Southeast Asia and include the date-time group and coordinates of each Special Forces insertion, extraction, and significant contact/observation throughout the Vietnam War.  It is imperative that the Historian review, enhance, and make available these Top-Secret records to DPAA researchers to achieve their noble mission.

Marine Archaeologist

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support scoping and costing of marine archaeological projects with Sr. Cultural Resources Specialists and Marine Archaeologists
  • Keep records and maintain the relevant State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) documentation pertaining to cultural resources
  • Preparing Work Plans, designing research and field methodologies, directing field crews including scheduling work, making individual or teamwork assignments, leading the instruction of others in the use of equipment, technology, and field methods, performing data interpretation, and assisting with report production
  • Contribute to research goals, field plans, work products (including technical reports), and resource-specific recommendations
  • Perform remote sensing surveys and shoreline assessments as necessary
  • Support all phases of archaeological investigation and regulatory compliance
  • Write archaeological reports and/or prepare archaeological site forms and in making decisions about project alternatives, NRHP evaluations, and assessing effects on historic properties
  • Work with technical field, lab and office staff, managers, and administrative staff to ensure that projects meet HDR quality standards
  • Perform manual labor

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • Meet BOEM Qualified Marine Archaeologist Standards
  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior Professional Qualification Standards for Archeology
  • Minimum 5 years of experience.
  • Experience with geophysical survey methodologies
  • Due to the nature of the work US Citizenship is required
  • Valid Driver’s License Required

Physical Requirements

  • Has the ability to perform bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing 50 lbs.
  • Has a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, including prolonged walking or standing on various terrain or marine vessels in a wide range of weather conditions.
  • Must be able to be on or function on watercraft of various sizes.
  • Specific vision requirements include the use of close, distance, depth, and peripheral vision, color vision necessary, and able to adjust focus
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in person, by telephone, and by email.
  • Must be able to effectively work in minimally supervised and/or unsupervised environments.
  • Work hours other than 8 to 5 which may include weekends and/or night shifts
  • Be able to operate a vehicle day or night
  • Approximately 50% of travel is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • MA/MS or Ph.D. in Maritime Archaeology  
  • Certified diver with demonstrated diver experience
  • Marine archaeology data acquisition, documentation, analysis, and interpretation skills (e.g. ROV deployment, underwater excavation techniques, etc)
  • Material culture analyses skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with State and Federal CRM legal framework

The Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program is authorized at 16 U.S.C. 1445c-1 and 16 U.S.C. 1445c to recognize outstanding achievement in master’s and doctoral degrees in oceanography, marine biology, maritime archaeology—these may include but are not limited to ocean and/or coastal: engineering, social science, marine education, marine stewardship, cultural anthropology, and resource management disciplines—and particularly encourages women and members of minority groups to apply.

The scholarship supports independent graduate level research through financial support of graduate degrees in such fields. Gender and minority status are not considered when selecting award recipients. However, special outreach efforts are employed to solicit applications from women and members of minority groups. Scholarships are distributed by disciplines, institutions, and geography, and by degree sought, with selections within distributions based on financial need, the potential for success in a graduate level studies program (academic achievement), and the potential for achieving research and career goals. The program is administered through the NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and is funded annually with 1% of the amount appropriated each fiscal year to carry out the National Marine Sanctuaries Act. 

The Gloucester 1682 Charitable Trust is recruiting Trustees 

The Gloucester 1682 Charitable Trust has been established to secure the heritage future of the Gloucester warship which sank off the coast of Norfolk in 1682. We are looking for four new Trustees with expertise and experience in one or more of the following areas: financial management and accounting, legal, maritime archaeology, business planning, operations and heritage. Experience of the charity sector would be preferred but is not essential. As a Trustee you will play an important role in helping develop our organisation and strategy as we move forward to realise this exciting project.

  • Ability to work independently and take responsibility for programmes of work.
  • Excellent research and report writing skills.
  • Highly motivated and flexible, with a professional and diligent attitude.

Desirable

  • HSE/HSA recognised diving qualification and commercial diving experience.
  • Powerboat certificate.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator and 3D modelling software.
