Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program College Internships

College Internship Program

LAMP and the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum, Inc. have created an internship program for undergraduate and graduate students interested in maritime history and underwater archaeology. Over the past seven years, LAMP has sponsored undergraduate and graduate students from University of North Florida, Flagler College, University of Florida, University of West Florida, State University of New York, UCLA and other colleges from across the U.S. The opportunity for college students to work side-by-side with professional archaeologists, archaeological conservators and museum and educational specialists is a valuable one that can lead to a career in any of these exciting fields. At the same time, the participation of these students is vital for LAMP, as they provide the hard work and enthusiasm that is necessary to carry out our mission of research and education. Depending on student interests and experience, interns may choose to work in the laboratory conserving artifacts, drafting or conducting archaeological analysis. Or they might join LAMP’s scientific diving team and assist archaeologists as they conduct archaeology underwater. Non-diving participants can still assist in fieldwork by serving as surface support for divers, sorting through screens during excavation or by operating remote sensing equipment during the search for undiscovered sites. Internships focusing on educational activities or museum management and exhibit design are also available.

Gaduate degree programs in Marine Science offered this Fall (2011) at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS): the Professional Master of Science (MPS).
The MPS is an innovative graduate degree at the University of Miami intended for students who seek advanced training in the marine science and conservation fields, as well as the development of workplace skills highly valued by employers. The MPS program prepares students for science careers in business, government, or non-profit organizations where employment demands are growing. The curriculum is structured to allow students to complete their degree in as little as 12 months, with the training and real-world experience necessary for employment in entry to mid-level positions in today’s professional job market.
The curriculum combines rigorous study in select areas of marine and atmospheric science with interdisciplinary coursework in business, public health, communications, law and other professional domains.  In place of a research-based thesis, all MPS students complete a 3-6 month internship in a business, government, or public sector enterprise, where they learn to apply their skills in a “hands-on” setting. All MPS graduates must complete 30 credits, consisting of 24 credits of graduate coursework and 6 credits of internship training. Submerged Cave Archaeology: Methods, Theory, and Recent Findings (Call for Papers)

We are planning sessions at SHA and SAA conferences for underwater caves. We already have several excellent papers lined up that are a good mix of North American and Mesoamerican, with several potential papers from our European counterparts. We would like more, so interested individuals should send a short abstract to pcampbell@cairnstl.org by June 5 for the SHA conference or September 15 for the SAA conference.

SHA January 2012 Baltimore, MD
SAA April 2012 Memphis, TN

Conference Session
Submerged Cave Archaeology: Methods, Theory, and Recent Findings

Submerged caves present different challenges and opportunities than traditional underwater sites. Springs, flooded caverns, sinkholes, cave lakes, sumps, and siphons are significant not only as features in ancient landscapes, but also sheltered environments that protect cultural material from nature’s dynamic forces. A relatively small number of submerged cave sites have been published; however, interest is on the rise as archaeologists realize the potential of these sites. Publications show that approaches differ widely based on the background and training of the archaeologist. This session acts as a discussion for this developing subdiscipline while examining methodological approaches, theoretical frameworks for interpreting cave sites, and recent findings.
