About the position: Entry level positions with the interpretive staffs (Ships’ Crew) at the USS Constellation & Baltimore Maritime Museum offer a wide range of challenges and opportunities. Starting salary is between $7.00 and $8.50 (based on educational background). Promotions are tied directly to presentations and tours mastered. Crew members are assigned to one or more of several sites within the Museum. Some crew members work only aboard Constellation while some only work at the more modern, steel ship sites and light house. Quite a few crew members work at all the sites. Although duties vary at each site, crew members are always the first and last contact visitors make with each site, and it is always important that each crew member make excellent first impressions and reflect the best qualities upon the site and the museum. Communication skills, courtesy, and knowledge about the site are of paramount importance.
General responsibilities at the USS Constellation and Museum building, USCGC Taney, USS Torsk, Light Ship Chesapeake, and the Seven-Foot Knoll Light House include but may not be limited to:
Daily, routine and maintenance duties
Learning and practicing safe work habits, to be on task, and to be an effective co-worker who promotes a positive work ethic and good morale
Becoming an effective spokesperson for the Museum and the Living Classrooms Foundation
Specific responsibilities include but may not be limited to:
Developing a working fund of knowledge concerning histories, nomenclature, procedures, and characteristics of each of the five museum sites, as well as a working familiarization of naval and nautical matters
Developing interpersonal communication skills necessary when working with the public
Developing procedural skills for these working areas: ship’s museum, gangway, making hourly rounds, opening and closing the ship and the building
Reporting to work and from breaks on time
Maintaining a complete uniform
Reading and becoming familiar with literature about each site as required
Performing such other duties assigned as necessary by the Chief of the Watch, Coordinators, and the Deputy Director of Operations (DDO)
Requirements for Promotion to Ordinary Seaman
· Demonstrate formative leadership traits and strong work ethic
· Learn at least one site-specific presentation, pass with a 90 percent or better the written and practical preparatory examination for that presentation
· Deliver the presentation, receive a critique from a senior interpretor, revise the presentation, and deliver it to the public
· Demonstrate strong work ethics and professionalism
· Receive recommendation for promotion from Interpretation Coordinator and DDO
· Pass the “Ordinary Seaman’s Examination” by scoring 90 percent or better on the written and practical examinations

The Paul Cuffe Memorial Fellowship for the Study of Minorities in American Maritime History is being offered by the Munson Institute at Mystic Seaport. Since 1989, the Cuffe Fellowship has provided funds to researchers from universities, colleges, and museums who were pursuing research considering the participation of minorities in American maritime affairs. Topics have included seafaring, shore side work and the make up of shore side communities, entrepreneurship, the fisheries, the merchant marine and navy, Native Americans, African Americans, Cape Verdeans, immigration, comparative studies, gender. Fellowships support research and writing, a portion of which should normally be carried out in the Mystic, CT area. Deadline March 30, 2008

Summer Graduate Courses in Maritime History
The Frank C. Munson Institute of American Maritime Studies is accepting applications for the 2008 summer courses. Students may audit or participate for credit in any of three courses: Maritime History Survey, Maritime History Seminar, and Independent Research, all of which are accredited through Trinity College, and the University of Connecticut.
Housed on the grounds of its parent organization, Mystic Seaport, The Museum of American and the Sea, students will have access to the G. W. Blunt White Library. The Library holds 75,000 volumes and a manuscript collection of approximately 700,000logs, journals, business records, and correspondence. In addition to the library, students have daily access to the museum’s collection of vessels and artifacts. Field seminars to historic seaports round out the studies. DUTIES:
Supervise the care of the Museum’s collection of maritime artifacts and create new educational exhibits for the education of the general public and school groups. Duties include: evaluation, accession, and conservation of collection, as well as working within the community to identify and acquire appropriate additions to the collection. Refine and update exhibits as necessary to ensure that subject matter is relevant to Museum’s mission. Maintain an inventory of acquired items and provide for proper storage. Supervise volunteers and interns working on collection and exhibits. Work with Museum Director and appropriate staff to create long-term plan for funding, care and display of
collections.
Assist with creation of new programs for public and school groups. Duties include: organizing guest speakers, creating hands-on activities for family visitors, training volunteers, and promoting of Museum through newsletter articles.
Assist with operations when needed, including special event staffing and special tours.
REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor of Arts Degree from an accredited 4-year college or university is required. Masters of Arts Degree preferred with concentration in history or Museum studies. Two years of curatorial and exhibit experience required as well as knowledge of Museum standards and procedures.

Job description: The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is seeking a Collections Manager. This person provides initial managerial oversight for the permanent collection of the Museum’s Exhibits Department. The manager will Inventory and research the collection, maintain catalogue and electronic data files on the permanent collection of two and three dimensional objects in a variety of formats and media, label and/or supervise labeling of the collection, organize the storage vaults and boxes, and manage research materials and files. The manager will also serve as liaison between Exhibits staff and other museum departments for collection-related storage and data issues not involving actual aircraft, and the fabric of the ships Growler and Intrepid. This person will also work with the Chief Curator and Curator of History to help determine sources of continued funding for collection cataloguing, storage and conservation.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in History or Library Science and one or more years of museum and collection/archival management or related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Proficient computer knowledge, including proficiency with word processing, database, and spreadsheet software. Strong organizational skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, write reports, business correspondence, and exhibits materials. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and vendors. Ability to calculate figures and amounts and to apply concepts of basic algebra. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to work weekends, holidays, and evenings as necessary.

On 7th June and 31st August 2008.
These courses are of interest to both divers and non-divers, and will hopefully include a ‘foreshore walk’ (Subject to weather!) as part of the day-long course. The course will also include practical sessions both in the ‘dry’ and in a local swimming-pool. Non-divers will be given commensurate tasks whilst the divers are getting wet!
The course fee of £25 is inclusive of all course costs but does not include
overnight accommodation.

More Hampton Roads Naval Museum internship information
The Hampton Roads Naval Museum Summer Education Internship is seeking inquiries regarding a full-time, twelve-week, paid internship.
Working with museum educators on all summer programs, the intern’s tasks may range from implementing daily public programs, educational tours, assisting with teacher workshops, special events, research, and writing. The intern should demonstrate an ability to present to visitors individually and as a group. Organizational skills are important. Knowledge of American and Military history preferred. Must be able to lift 50 lbs, and be able to stand for several hours at a time.
Length: 12 weeks
Dates of internship: May 26- August 17, 2008
Required commitment: 32 hours per week
Stipend: $10.00 per hour
Experience: History or Museum Studies undergraduates with at least incoming junior standing (or have recently graduated) or be currently registered graduate students (or have recently completed coursework.) Please note that junior standing is roughly equivalent to having completed at least one-half of an undergraduate degree.
There will be NO housing provided; intern is responsible for obtaining lodging and board.
