The University of Oregon, Department of Anthropology announces a 1.0 FTE tenure-track position in archaeology at the Assistant or Associate Professor level beginning Fall Term, 2012.  We seek an outstanding, broadly-trained coastal or island archaeologist whose work addresses environmental and cultural change that has relevance for problems facing society today.  An archaeologist working on population migrations or continental or island colonizations would also supplement our regional expertise.  We seek a colleague who will diversify us, complementing not duplicating the existing strengths in the department.  Candidates should also have a strong record of publication and working collaboratively with local communities.  We aim to hire an individual with interdisciplinary interests who will strengthen links among the subfields of anthropology in the department.  The successful candidate is expected to conduct a rigorous, fieldwork and laboratory based, externally-funded research program as well as teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.  A Ph.D. is required by October 15, 2011. The Underwater Archaeology Unit (UAU) of Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht (DAHG) is compiling an Inventory of all shipwrecks recorded in Irish Waters. The UAU currently has a wreck database containing approximately 10,000 wreck records which is held in an MS Access database. The format of this database has recently been redesigned and therefore a certain level of data formatting and standardisation is required in order to facilitate efficient use of the database. DAHG now invites tenders to carry out a block of work updating and editing the Shipwreck Inventory database. The successful tenderer will need to be in a position to begin work on this project from 19th September 2011 and it is envisaged that the contract shall be completed by 6 April 2012. A detailed specification in relation to the tender request is presented in the RFT document.

The Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project (RIMAP), a not-for-profit corporation based out of Newport, Rhode Island, USA, is offering two 1-day underwater archaeology-related workshops in October 2011:

The School of Art & Design History, Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at Kingston University, and the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich are offering a funded, full-time PhD studentship, tenable for 3 years, commencing October 2011. The studentship is funded through the AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Awards Scheme. The project will be supervised by Professor Anne Massey, Kingston University, and John Graves, Curator of Ship History at the National Maritime Museum.  This project supports the work of one doctoral student to investigate the archives of the shipping company, the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (renamed P&O in 1840), and its subsidiary companies, during the period of its operation.

DUTIES:  Serves as the Republic’s technical expert on archaeology and historic preservation.  The Archaeologist will guide or assist the Historic Preservation Office in the following activities: Head the archaeological compliance program of the Historic Preservation Act of 1991.  Train Historic Preservation Office staff in archaeology and cultural resource management to enable them to be as knowledgeable, self-sufficient and self-directed as possible in carrying out their mission.  Developing, coordinating and carrying out plans for archaeological underwater and terrestrial surveys and test excavations including the preparation and delivery of final reports.  Establishing and maintain standardized cultural resource inventories and registration system.  Monitoring ground disturbing projects.  Assessing the condition and evaluating the significance of a variety of cultural resources, including terrestrial and underwater cultural resources. Historic preservation planning.  Designing and managing cultural resources databases.  Ensuring compliance with Section 106 of the U.S. National Historic Preservation Act with regard to U.S. federal undertakings in the Republic of the Marshall islands.  Research onducted or supervised by the Archaeologist shall meet the U.S. Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology and Historic Preservation.  Reporting publications, audiovisual materials, and training and public information materials produced by the Archaeologist in the course of his/her duty shall include the required acknowledgment of NPS financial support, the required NPS/Interior disclaimer statement, and the required U.S. Government non-discrimination statement.  One copy of any publication must be approved by the RMI HPO and the National Park Service. Also provides oversight/collaborates with the cultural resouce management program at the U.S. Army at Kwajalein Atoll.
 
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a recognized college or university with a Master degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or related field.  Plus at least three (3) years professional experience in the fields.  Or, any combination of education and experience which may be acceptable to the Public Service Commission.
