Seminar: Beneath the Surface: Marine Archaeology, Technology, and Reclaiming the Human Story from the Wreck of the Henrietta Marie
The Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT is excited to welcome Prof. Michael Cottman, former reporter for The Washington Post, Newsday, and The Miami Herald, and current Assistant to the Dean with Morgan State University’s School of Global Journalism and Communication.
His seminar will examine the Henrietta Marie slave-ship wreck as a case study at the intersection of marine science, archaeological method, and African American historical research. Discovered on New Ground Reef near Key West, the wreck offers more than 20,000 recovered artifacts that document the material infrastructure of the early transatlantic slave trade. Equally central is the role of contemporary Black scuba divers and scholars whose work reframes underwater exploration as both scientific investigation and cultural reclamation.
