The role – what’s involved?

Wessex Archaeology is a key partner in the offshore renewables industry providing heritage sector support at all stages from EIA to Operations and Maintenance for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects.

We are seeking to employ talented professionals to the role of Marine Geophysicist with a background in geophysics, archaeology, and related geoscience to work as part of a collaborative multi-disciplinary team supporting offshore renewable energy and other projects. You will work alongside colleagues in the Geoservices directorate (including Terrestrial Geophysics, Geoarchaeology and Environmental) and our Coastal & Marine and Consultancy teams on an exciting range of projects located both within UK waters and internationally.

A successful candidate will be able to demonstrate aptitudes in one or more of the relevant the scientific fields of geophysics, archaeology or geology congruent with their experience. Roles from recent graduate intake to experienced mid-career are available to candidates.

The Marine Geophysics role description (attached) details the relevant skillsets required for the roles specified for each grade. Previous experience interpreting marine geophysical data would be advantageous at all levels. However, we recognise that essential training over, typically, a 6 month period is required and will be provided.

The precise responsibilities of the role will depend on the grade at which the successful candidate is appointed.

Essential certification

  • Hold a qualification in Geophysics, Archaeology or Earth Science or a closely related discipline.
  • Industry or academic experience relevant to the grade of application.
  • Excellent report writing and communication skills. Previous experience of project management would be desirable for the more senior grades, but training will be provided.
