This project will undertake, using the national method for Historic Seascape Characterisation (HSC), a GIS-based characterisation of the English sector of the Irish Sea and adjacent waters and coastal zones, as defined in the project brief. This project forms one ‘lot’ of a broader project which aims to undertake historic characterisation of the whole of England’s coasts, seas and adjacent UK Controlled Waters, creating a national HSC database to inform coastal and marine management and spatial planning.
Applicants should have a first degree, and preferably a postgraduate qualification in Archaeology or another relevant subject. They should have an excellent command of GIS (especially ArcGIS), an in-depth understanding of England’s historic landscape and a working knowledge of the of current planning context for historic and maritime landscapes. Expertise in maritime archaeology and/or history and the archaeology of north-west England will be an advantage.
